emac on its way!

Posted by: Dan M on 20 April 2004

I've just ordered the latest emac for the home office -- I think this combo is ideal for only $750. Apple were smart this time and added USB 2.0, along with a faster G4 processor and bus, larger L2 cache, and 17" flat screen. All this with an OS I actually enjoy using. Should arrive next week! Smile

cheers,

Dan

Well done, Dan --

Hope you've got them to stuff as much RAM as possible in it before it ships. You'll need it as with OS X the 256 MB standard can be a bit limiting (who'd have thought we'd be saying that ten years ago?) and adding extra RAM to the All-In-One designs yourself can be a royal pain in the arse.

Cheers,

Tim

Tim,

Thanks. I doubled the RAM to 512MB. Perhaps I should have added more but my G3 ibook seems to do ok with 384MB under Panther. I'm not planning on doing any video on this guy, so hopefully half a gig of ram is enough (for now). It is amazing how much memory needs have grown over the last few years, considering the relatively constant requirements (mail, letters, home finance, ...). I swear it's a conspiracy by chip/pc manufacturers.

cheers,

Dan

Hi Dan,

Where did you get such a good deal on the eMac? I'm on the market. I wouldn't rule out an Apple, especially if reliability is better than last time I had one (87-91; needed $$$ repairs often). Thanks.

So Ludwig, are those new underwear paying off? Smile The base price on an eMac is $799, but you can get $50 off if you're affiliated with Universities etc. That includes a free HP printer (after rebate). I did add extra RAM -- up to 512Mb, but I've forgotten what the cost of that was. I found out later that they'd put just one RAM chip in so I still have an empty slot, and on an emac it's pretty easy to do yourself. The only downside I've found about the eMac is the fan is a little noisy. HTH,

cheers

Hi Dan,

A noisy fan. I might hate that. Though not as much as replacing the power supply in my previous Mac 3x in 4 years.

Do modern Macs last 4-5 years or do you throw them out after 2? A friend mentioned an article reporting that Apple quality has taken a steady dive recently (Desktops? Laptops? Both? Not sure.). Given my past experience (which is why I became a PC guy) I'd hate to get wooed and then burned.
