New X-CDPS burndy cable on CDS1

Posted by: Brucie on 20 April 2004

If anyone owns a CDS1 and has not yet upgraded to the new X-CDPS burndy cable then I can strongly recommend you do so. 265 quid.

So much more of everything is there. Its smoother and the music takes on a distinctly more organic quality. 3D image is also better but the music really rocks.

And I have only had it for 2 weeks.

It's a very worthwhile upgrade.

Cheers

Eddy,

Yes it is black but its the latest incarnation. My understanding is that it came out of research on the CDS3. Its only been available for 6months or so(?).

I'm sure the black burndy is a lot closer to the new X-CDPS cable than my old grey one.

cheers

Funky,

I've only had it 2 weeks and the first week got virtually zero play.

Just called my local dealer (Hawthorne) about this... They claim no changes for the last 3 years. They say that the =new= black cable isn't compatible with the CDS1 (differents pins).

So... uh... who is misinforming who?

Yannzola,

Might it not be available in the US? (unlikely I would have thought).

The new cable has been mentioned on the forum before now, that's how I found out about it.

I'll speak to my dealer and find out though.

Yannzola,

Hawthorne are correct that the S-XPS Burndy cannot be used the CDS due to different pin orientation. However, the S-CDPS Burndy is a version of the S-XPS Burndy that can be used with the CDS/CDPS. It's a very worthwhile upgrade for CDS owners. It's available to special order so that's why some dealers may not be completely up to speed on it's availability. NANA can advise on price and availability.

How long do you think before someone suggests Brucie try his Burndy the wrong way round?

I contacted Robert at Hawthorne, who in turn contacted NANA in Chicago. Apparently, the folks at NANA do =not= recommend the new X-CDPS for older CDS1 players. They claim that (in their experience) the new cables wider bandwidth reveals the limitations of the older CDS1's signal... highlighting digital artifacts formerly "filtered" by the original (3 year old)black Burndy. It also brightens the sound considerably, which some may find pleasing... but others not. Therefore they (NANA) have not recommended this "upgrade" to their US dealers.

Interesting, eh?

Yes it is...I found my new X-CDPS Burndy to be an improvement in all areas over my (first generation) Black Burndy as well as my original Gray Burndy. Perhaps my 102/Hicap is filtering the new front-end nasties though ;-)

I have to disagree with NANA and agree with Dave. The music is smoother not harsher. In my experience, there have been no draw backs.

Well... I'm curious what Naim (UK) thinks about this? Do they realize NANA's position? Do they agree? Do they care?

Hmmm... I wonder if Hawthorne could order the cable... and let me take it for a test drive?

For the record, our opinion is that the SXPS is better no matter what. There was a misunderstanding in the communication of our feelings on the SXPS. It is possible that in some systems, it may not be the best upgrade to do first, but it is better than the old burndy. Period.

Just to be clear, when you say the S-XPS is better... I'm assuming you are also refering to the new S-CDPS burndy used with a CDS1? Correct?

If so... I would recommened updating your U.S. dealers... (at least Hawthorne).

Side Note: Which players are the S-CDPS burndy compatible with? CDS, CDX, and CDS2...Any others? Thanks!
