the greatest hifi bargain in the known universe

i recently upgraded from a 42.5 to a 72 (both powered by a dual railed SNAPs). there was never a problem with the 42.5, but i had an itch and wanted to scratch it (nothing to do with problems downstairs, you understand).
as you all know, the 42.5 is a bit agricultural looking, those big chunky tractor tyre selectors and the tape/monitor selector switch look like they were based on original designs by Eli Whitney for his cotton gin.
i expected the luxuriant, glowing fascia 72 to lift my senses far beyond the 42.5.
but no.
the 72 is better, there is no denying it - the bass is deeper, instruments are more distinct and highs are sweeter... but it's not everything i'd hoped and more.
my theory is that a better power amp would really demonstrate the difference between the two pre's (i currently use a massey-ferguson style nap 90). but i suspect some (most?) of you think a hi-cap is the order of the day. or perhaps that i should get an LP12.
i do have an alternative theory, at less than £100 second-hand (usually around £70) the 42.5 is, perhaps, the greatest hifi bargain in the known universe.
