Real Soul

In view of the furore surrounding Joss Stone and her albeit jolly good debut has anybody picked up on the splendid Candi Staton cd? I think that the smilarly youthful Ms Staton can certainly sing 'Deep Soul'Very different from the disco diva of later years.

On a similar note, have you heard early Pointer Sisters material (produced by Allen Toussaint?) - absolutely fantastic, and a zillion miles from "Jump".

The Joss Stone album didn't do much for me, in that the production was a bit limp. Great voice though.
Markus recommended the second volume (1968-1971) of the Complete Stax/Volt Soul Singles box set (9 CDs) last year, and it is stunning. It's a bit expensive, but the 12"x12" booklet that comes with it goes some way toward justifying the cost. I believe he might have the first volume too, which I'd be interested to hear his opinion of.
Kevin - is there a particular album? My knowledge of Alain Toussaint ends at The Meters and the Soul Jazz New Orleans comps, but I love what I have heard.

I have a copy of the first Stax boxed set that is about 12 years old and I would have to say that IMHO it is somewhat superior to the second set. albeit somewhat inconsistent. The booklet is equally good though.

Just got the recent Howard Tate disc a comeback along the same lines as the Burke.Authentic Jerry Ragavoy production and Tate's voice is still amazing!
