LP12 v P9?

Posted by: Richard P on 21 April 2004

I was trying to balance my Ekos tonearm the other day, and found that I could move the counterweight and it would still balance(!). I thought therefore it was time to upgrade to an Ekos 2. This got me onto more thinking (oops...), and I thought what about trying a Rega P9 first?

Well, I've searched the forum and views are mixed, so I guess it's suck-it-and-see time.

But what cartridge should I try to hear on the P9?

My LP12 has an Akiva.

Tom's right about P9 and Dynas. A Te Kaitora would be nice. Sadly I have to make do with a DV17D2...

Tom

Thanks for the reply (and the others).

Some more questions:

Did you have an LP12 before the P9? If so, why did you switch? I see you have a P75 - do you connect to the BNC or DIN socket on your 52? Is Rega's power supply a switched-mode device?

The P-75 is connected to the 52 with a Chord Cobra via the DIN (Tuner). It seemed better than the straight through boards last time I checked.

The Rega has an off board PSU but as to being switch mode I'm afraid I don't know.

Actively enjoying it all
Hy Tom!Read
all comments on Xerxes,Lp12,P9.
as there were:
Lp12 sounds more like a turntable?(sony does also turntables.)
Rp9 more like a CD?(wadia does also cd)
Xerxes is lifeless?(top performance as far as i remember)
Verdier majestic? (i owned)
Kuzma stabi a bargain?(i owned)
project cheap?(i owened)
Audiomecca J1?(iowened)
Now i own p3 (very content)
Thinking logical P9 must be a little better Wink

I will buy p9 undemoed! I do this only twice.

for the first time.
for the last time.

The REGA P9 was featured in the movie "What Women Want" starring Mel Gibson. In one of the scenes Mel was seen dancing to the tunes played on a P9. Talk about star endorsement.

Hy Idris Mohammed.what do you think
about P9 soundwise? imo you have the best and most neutral phonostage and amps in this forum.
did you ever try p9 inyour system?

Hi OJ,

I have heard the P9 briefly at a local dealer with REGA amplification. It sounds very good and this comes from a guy who owns a Roksan TMS. Of course the P9 has got weaknesses but this has got to do with a slightly lean sounding bass and slightly noisier bearings when compared with the TMS but I must say I can live happily with the P9

In terms of pace, rhythm and timing it scores top marks and definitely deserves to be at the front of a top flight Naim system.

On the plus side, you would definitely don't have to spend hours upon hours of fiddling and tweaking the P9 just to make it sounding good. It's basically a plug and play kind of record player.

My kudos go to Roy Gandhi for designing such a fine player.

Listen to one and I won't be surprised you'll buy it straight away.

All the best in your hi-fi pursuits. CHEERS!

Hy Idris!thanks for your comment.I first wanted
to go for xerxesX/artemiz/shiraz ,but the plinth problems of old xerxes let me drift in direction of p9;also regawallshelf is easier to place in my apartement than xerxes table.
and price of xerxesX is high.
Hope p9 will sound more in a xerxes way than similar to lp12.
