Very old 250
Posted by: Fran on 05 April 2004
I've been offered an old 250 (s/n 15xx). It's a chrome bumper case but in mint looking condition. As far as I know it hasn't been back to Naim for a service. Asking price is 200£
does the forum think it is worth this amount?
thanks,
Fran

Certainly! Even if its hardly been played it'll need a service - which I understand could be tricky just now.
Buy it anyway, and if you don't can I?

The price is great! However I would be tempted to have a look inside as well as having a good listen. If it does not look neat and tidy inside then be carefull as it may have been mucked about with.
Check on the price of a service with naim and dial that into your thinking. Give naim the serial No and find out the service / repair history (if any).

Thank you for your replies
I think i'm going to buy it and send to Naim for a recap and cosmetic change to olive look.

Hi Fran
Before you send off the 250, you should read the "Important Servicing Announcement".

I bought my chrome bumper 250, serial no 2564, new in 1982 and It will rack up 22 years continuous service in August of this year.
It's always sounded good and I never bothered having it recapped on the advice of a dealer, who basically maintained that the whole recapping thing was overrated, if the caps aren't leaking there's nothing to worry about, if it ain't broke don't fix it, blah, blah, blah.
Anyway, In February this year I took the plunge and had it and my two Hicaps done.
Wow, I didn't realise how much music had slowly gone awol over the years. It now sounds fabulous, unbelievably good and I'm kicking myself for not doing it years ago.
So yes, I'd say definitely buy it and get it recapped when you can.

Now you know how little 'some' dealers really know!
