Outlook/Btopenworld problem
Posted by: Hammerhead on 16 April 2004
My Outlook e-mailer thingy-bob seems to playing up as it will only receive in-coming e-mails but won't send the 4 e-mails I have sat in my out-box. If I press send/receive, the status only manages to reach 50%. Any ideas what might be causing the problem?
I'm at home on dial-up with Btopenworld. Broadband is due here next month - hurrah!
Cheers,
Steve

U need to be careful 99% of the time the fault usually is with the ISP. Have you checked on the bt site to see if there are any faults.
Outlook can also test your e-mails for you, but I'd not do this for a while until you are certain its your system and not theirs.
I speak from experience in this matter.
Soon to be going to eclipse.net from bt!

Sounds like there might be a problem with the smtp relay.

Steve,
I suggest you check your dialup a/c settings. In Outlook click on 'Tools' and select 'Accounts'. Select the dialer you're using from the list (probably marked as default) and click on 'Properties'. Select 'Server' tab and check that you have the SMTP gateway entered correctly as mail.btinternet.com
Also check that POP3 is selected in the 'server type' window at the top of the dialog. Below these entries your logon name and password should appear. Incorrect SMTP gateway address will prevent your mail from getting out.

Thanks all. I checked the settings and all seems to be as it should so the problem must be with the ISP.
Hopefully it'll be all sorted soon.

yeah, what David said, plus : "you're not using Norton Antivirus, are you?". I used to get these problems often back when I used it. Was often an update wreaking havok with the Outlook settings.

Rico,
Your 2p might be well spent as I do indeed use Norton Antivirus. My bro suggested that I scan incoming e-mails only as opposed to that and scanning outgoing mails as well but that was suggested when I was having problems sending e-mails with larger attachments (work in the most part). Since doing this, I've not had any problems with larger files.
The original problem was indeed Btopenworld's mail server though, so thanks again for the pointers.
Technology eh? Sent to keep us on our toes!
