Best place to buy an iPod?

And get it quickly, any suggestions?

I'm thinking right now that the 20gb model will be more than enough, possibly even a Mini.

cheers,
Paul

Paul,

John Lewis in Oxford Street seems to have loads of 'em, or, just across the Circus in Regent Street, there's that new (and fabulous) Apple Store of course!

Cheers,

Oddly it didn't occur to me that there's physical stores that might have them, just assumed mail order.. doh!

Are there any benefits of getting a dock?

At home I have an iMac, at work I have an XP workstation with USB, I'm assuming if I need to charge it at work I'd just need a USB cable - or are these iPod proprietry?

cheers,
Paul

Paul the ipods will come with the required cables for your needs, they are indeed propriety as they have a strip connector for the ipod end. The 20 gig models come with a dock, this is a massive must if you wanted to plug it into a home hifi as it has a line level out, apart from that they serve little purpose except to save a few valuable seconds plugging the cable in lol.

If your requirment is to use the ipod for filing as well as music then this can be set in the preferences in itunes, infact if you only wanted it for portable storage then simply setting the pref in itunes means you don't need itunes in the future.

One other thing, the ipod to comply with music regs will only use music from one computer, so you can't use itunes to copy music from one computer to the other.

However there is nothing stopping you physically dragging the music into a seperate folder on the ipod storage then dragging it out into itunes at the other end, stupid I know but its the law.

I've got an older 40 gig iPod (just over a year old). I'm assuming it hasn't changed, but on mine you have to select which format you want the hard disk in (windows or mac) and you have to format it for that format so you can't plug it into mac and then windows machines easily.

If you just want to charge it at work then you can just use the mains adapter at work.

I bought mine off the apple online store, when I bought it I looked around and everywhere was the same price. The apple store was doing free engraving on the back of the iPod at the time which is why I got it from there.

Best place? New York! (You'll recover the cost of the flight if you buy a couple of pairs of RayBans, plus a digital camera, in addition to the iPod.) But you may need to order it in advance.

Customs may also ADD the cost of your flight back on and then some. If there are any mains chargers etc they may not be switchable to 240v.

I got my iPod Photo in Dixons Duty Free on the way to Prague. Basically, £300ish, i.e. no VAT, which means colour and photos for the same price as music only, which is nice.

Normally, I'd avoid Dixons like the plague, but I knew what I was after, they had the 40Gb version of the Photo (they said they don't do the 60Gb) and the 20Gb of the standard iPod - so I went for the Photo. No regrets, a fantastic machine in all regards.

That's the same price as the Apple store and John Lewis so yes, it's probably unbeatable unless you can pick one up in the Apple refurb store per Hawk's earlier post.

Anyone know how to sort IPOD software on the PC (XP Pro). I haven't used mine for a while and now I come to add a few more CDs I find the software has screwed up. I can't install it again and I can't de-install it. All the time I get a message that the install process was interupted.

Any ideas anyone

The mains chargers work with both 110V and 240V. I bought my iPod in Canada and have charged it on both sides of the pond without trouble. All you need is an adapter plug.

As for finding the best price I think apple protects the pricing so you will be hard pushed to find someone selling it for less. A friend did manage try to negotiate a discount at one store and did manage to get some money off accessories he bought with the iPod, but no money of the iPod.

I got my iPod (20GB G4) in New York earlier this year (saved about £70 on the UK price). I have had no problems with it whatsoever. If you buy Statesie you will have a US charger, but you just pull out the US pins and replace with a simple proprietry lead.

If you're buying in the UK, and can get to London, I'd suggest the Apple Store on Regent Street. The staff there are extremely knowledgeable and very friendly, plus you'll have the chance to mooch round and gawk at all the Mac/iPod goodies.

I second the bit about getting a dock if you want to attach your iPod to your hi-fi. They're about £29.

Some sort of sleeve is recommended, as the iPod scarctches and tarnishes quite easily. I use an iSkin Evo2, which is a neat clear silicone rubber outer thingy with a little perspex screen. They're about £20, but you can get alll kinds of pouches, wallets and even socks(!).

I treat the ipod much like any gadget, its there to be used, its scratched but what the hey.
