Recommend a DAC?

Can anyone recommend a decent dac with Optical Toslink input?

The budget is £250 and I am happy to purchase second hand.

Cheers

Nick.

I had the pleasure of meeting Merlin from Zerogain.

He bought with him a Chord DAC64 which we connected up and it sounded a lot better than the CDi.

So yes my master plan is as discussed, I have now sold the CDi (I think) and purchased a harddrive, just need a DAC and cable and I won't look back.

The primary reaosn being I am looking at my CD collection including graphics on the screen as I write, I tell you we have been lisenting to a lot more music!

(I'll be keeping the LP12 though !)

BTW I am not rushng to purchase a DAC, i'll take me time and stic with the LP12 its not a great loss!

Snigger, well it sounded really good.

I had uncompressed Big Bud on the mac and the same Cd in the CDi.

The sound from the mac was cleaner and fresher, sounds stupid but I know what I mean, the CDi sounded flater in comparision.

I do realise that I will need to get a good dac, but I won't be spending DAC64 money.

My understanding of the toslink was that it transmits light, its going over 1 metre so will this have a major jitter f**k effect. Resonably it could go over half a metre.

The only other option I see is Firewire but then I am into totally different technology.

The long and short of it is for me this is a great solution, it means I have access to all my music in a format which means I can pick and choose very quickly.

Mr Tibbs and myself are advocates of midiman.

You cannot go wrong with this wee gem. The review is out of date .. 24 bit is the standard.

We both have Midiman mixers and they are ultra quiet ( no discernible noise ) compact and quite cheap.

I remember the Arcam Black Box sounded OK a few years back. Not sure about the connection type though.
I could also be tempted with a Meridian DAC if I were thinking about case styling...

Gary,
I am qith Quincy the midiman superdac 2496 is a fantastic little product for the cash, you can get them for as little as £160. They are very easily modded. Tone and Andy Weekes have both done interesting things to them. I have not heard a modded unit yet, but believe that the upgrades worked very well. Take a look on Zerogain for more. Search for midiman and look for posts by Andy.

Sight and Sound in Swindon had a DPA DPM1 mkII on their shelf on Saturday. Not sure exactly how much but I think it was £275-00.
