Unplanned TT upgrade?

Posted by: JonR on 18 March 2004

Dear Forum-peoples,

My system: Planar3/RB300/Super Elys/Stageline N/NAC112/NAP150/CD5/FC2/Rega Kytes (through NACA4 cable).

Following my faux pas on an earlier thread, in which I mistakenly suggested the FC2 can power 3 items, I was left wondering what sort of improvement to the sound of my TT I could expect if I was able to power the Stageline from the FC2 rather than the NAC112's DC supply.

I have discovered I need a 4-5 pin din SNAIC to facilitate this upgrade which a dealer informs me would cost the princely sum of £70.

I welcome suggestions/comments from anyone as whether this be considered worthwhile or not, or should I perhaps get a Hicap?

Thank you very much in advance.

Regards,

JonR

Jeremy,

Many thanks for your input, much appreciated. If I were to get a Hicap, would I still need the 4-5 din SNAIC or does it come packed with its own cable? Also, did you get a Hicap2 or one of the so-called 'Olive' units?

Regards,

I agree with JeremyT. A HiCap powered Stageline took my vinyl playback (LP12/Ittok/Cirkus) to a new level. I also have a HiCap2 powering my 112 and a FC2 powering the CD5 and Headline.

Thanks Dave, it seems like getting a Hicap is the way to go, though I reckon I could use it to power the 112 for an all-round improvement in my system. That would then free up the FC2 to power the CD5 and the Stageline.

You need the 4/5 Snaic rather than the usual 5/5 or 4/4 Snaic to connect the Stageline’s power supply to the pre amp.

A standard 5/5 240˚ din-to-din Snaic connects the stageline to the chosen power supply – power upstream signal downstream back in to the power supply.

The signal out sockets on the power supplies are 4 pin and usually terminate at an amp or another power supply (for a S/naxo). These inputs are 4 pin, hence the need for a 4/4 Snaic. (250’s and 135’s use XLR plugs and sockets instead of din)

However in the case of the stageline and prefix the power supply output enters the preamp via the usual line level route, a 5 pin 240˚ din socket, hence a 4/5 Snaic.

A second hand Hicap would only come with the more unusual 4/5 Snaic if it had been used to power a phono stage. If you bought a new Hicap then you could probably specify as the Snaics all cost the same - or at least they did last time i asked.

Julian,

Thank you very much for the detailed explanation. Definitely much food for thought.
