On the run from £20k to the US
Posted by: Webke on 26 January 2005
A member of my family accumulated alot of debt during and after university, this debt became unmanagable (excessing £20k). Since he was 18 he had always gone to the USA to coach football, over the last few times that he had gone he started to go out with a girl that he had met whilst over there. To bring you upto date, he ended up marrying this person, and now lives there with her and is currently applying to live there for good. He has quite a strong case, as his wife has been over to England a few times beofre the advent of marraige. He seems very happy with this girl, but me and my family cant help but think he is running away from this debt, and sees the US as a place of hiding etc.
What I would like to know is that is there a good chance he will get away from this debt that he owes here? - Will the US perform checks that may prevent his visa application.
If anyone has any experience with this area of interest?

Weren't you the Pete888 from Hull who was banned for racism?
Apologies if I got the wrong person.

It would seem highly likely.
Pete8888 was banned from here. I notice an identical post on pfm by a Pete8888. It could just be coincidence.

He was on here as pete8883 - a rather curious similarity to that of the PFMer who has started an indentical thread over there.
It does remind me of a thread recently containing some rather inflammatory views he posted in relation to where he lives....

This family member of yours doesn't look remarkably like you does he ?

I have strong views on this subject.
I am 46 years old. I have been employed, self employed and owned a number of companies. I have been through good times and hard times. I have been both broke and at times relatively rich.
I have never failed to pay a debt of any sort, nor have any of the companies or businesses that I have owned. I have never reneged on my word.
About the only thing I have that cannot be taken away from me is my reputation as a honourable man.
In my view, a man without honour has nothing.
Rant over…..

Presumably he would never be able to get back in to England easily, now being from Hull this is perhaps not a problem, but I would dearly miss my home town.

Garyi
Why coming from Hull would that not be such a problem.
Can you please explain.

Webke,
I agree with London Lad.
If a debt has been run up to 20k some one will end up paying, probably indirectly through increased charges by the body’s owed money, so it may be you and I.
So hopefully he will be refused entry to the US until he has done the right thing and faced his responsibilities.
I have not visited Hull so wont comment, but perhaps
this may give you a hint to why he may not feel as homesick as… Garyi perhaps?
(don’t take it to heart, its probably just a bit of harmless sarcasm).
John.

I'm looking at trying to get a permanent resident card for Canada (similar to US green card I think). And when applying for that you have to submit various supporting documents which include proof you have > 10k CAD available for the move. I would assume the US process is similar and it may prove to be hard if you are 20k in debt.
I've also been living in Toronto for a few years now (on a work permit) and when I came over here I found out having a credit record is very important (even for renting an apartment) and some places did a check on me in UK.
Plus relations between US and UK are pretty strong and I think if the creditors find out he is in US he will not be safe.
Of course there is also the moral view (expressed by London Lad), but it would seem he doesn't seem too concerned by this.
