Cartridge time again?

Posted by: --duncan-- on 14 March 2004

It doesn't seem a long time since I last asked for advice. I did get a DV 10x4 and I've been pretty happy with it but it has now done at least 1200 hours and things can get pretty fierce by the end of a side on certain LPs despite assiduous cleaning and vacuuming. I'm presuming a new cartridge is called for. Conveniently, my wife happens to be in Japan at the moment and is feeling guily at having abandoned me.

I've found the DV enjoyable but sometimes a little bright and lacking in bottom. I'm looking for something that's as engaging but with a lot more ooomph. I have spare MC cards (K type, I think). Musical tastes are much as before. Budget is £500 (UK prices) or thereabouts.

How can I tell if I do need a new cart. and what are your suggestions?

Hi Duncan

Apart from the obvious EOS distortion, the stylus drops lower in the groove and thus picks up more gunk, when it is worn.

I changed my DV 10x4 for a '5' and found it to be quite an upgrade. More sparkle at the top and more oomph at the bottom end. Good value at £250 here - much less in Japan no doubt.
