Ignoring David.

I have detected some distortio issues with most Yes albums I don't know the reasoning behind this.

Specifically the inside track on side on of Fragile goes really Bad.

The inside track of all sides of TFTO

And the one you mention. I have not found a specific cure, suffice to say I have worked my way through a fair few versions of Fragil including the original and none have really dealt with it, its also noticable on CD for Fragile so I guess some sort of mastering issue.

OJ - Our Mr Slater is a total musical snob, and as such (much like us all here) hates to admit to liking Yes. He has all the albums and listens to them in strict rotation, but could never admit it.
I'm so glad that Fragile sounds awful on the inside tracks, as I thought way back when I had a turntable, that my cartridge was buggered. Not that it matters now, but did contribute to me ditching vinyl because everything sounded scratched and damaged.
OTD I have by now guessed to mean "on the deck", as DS buys so many albums, he has to keep playing records 24 hours a day to get through them all - remembering to fit in the Yes albums of course.
Taste is taste. Only my wife has bad taste (not in men fortunately ) DS has impeccable taste

Yeah sure

With a lot of this stuff the perspective changes with where you were at the time. I was indifferent to Yes but went with a friend to see them debut Close to the Edge at Crystal Palace. It was a great day; glorious weather, friendly crowd, good drugs etc. I bought CTTE as a momento and still enjoy it about once a year. If I was a Thatcherite child discovering this for the first time, I'm sure I'd hate Yes too.

Close to the Edge is a damn fine album played by musicians who can play. And that doesn't always seem to be a requirement of "pop stars" these days.

OK, the lyrical content may seem a bit irregular today, but so what? Listen to the music. This is music that you really have to listen to. Maybe that's asking too much.

I admit I've not bought any of the recent Yes albums, but the following are all really worth spending time with:

The Yes Album
Fragile
Close to the Edge
Relayer
Going for the One

and I'd even suggest Tormato and Time and a Word are pretty good fun too.

Think there were worse Groups than yes, at their time and today,my comment was only on the bad sound quality of close to the edge.
I must admit (hearing only records,no live performance)their music is not that fascinating
to me that i have the wish to own all their albums.(Own close to the edge,and yes solos)

Personally I love Tales of the Tossergraphic Oceans & Yessongs best. My Yes phase was Fragile to Tormato, which finished me off. I find Relayer now unlistenable shite. I even bought Steve Howe's Beginnings a few months back after remembering it from the 70's. Big mistake - although I got Chris Squire's Fish Out of Water at the same time, and that is actually pretty OK.

It was music of it's time,it was trendy but it has not worn it's age well.
From memory Fragile probably is the best, Mood for a day helped turn me on to Accoustic guitar and eventually Kottke, Bream etc, so Steve eternally gratefull, never saw them live but i did have a ticket for them at Stoke city Football stadium in 1975, but as i recall after a very drunken Friday night i was detained at Her Majesty's Pleasure until Monday morning so i missed them, thank's Liz i owe you one.

Alright, alright! I can't possibly let this thread go any further without adding my tuppence-worth...

I like 'Yes' - sorry guys, that's just the way that is. I have 'Fragile', 'Close to the Edge' and 'The Yes Album' and have also owned 'Yessongs' and 'Going for the One'. A few years back I made a characteristically vain attempt to regain some sort of 'credibility' by allowing others to convince me that their music was shite, and consequently sold all the albums I had. However recently I decided: sod it, I like 'em, what the hell, and have re-purchased 'Fragile', 'Close to the Edge' and 'The Yes Album'.

I have to disagree with Clive Blackman though: people who dislike 'Yes' are not actually tossers. 'Yes' is an acquired taste, I'll grant you - it just happens to satisfy my pallette.

I must admit I have not heard everything that 'Yes' has done, but their early-70's stuff is great and I apologise to no-one for liking it, nor do I condemn those that don't.

PS: If you look at how down-to-earth Rick Wakeman is these days, especially when he appears on shows like 'Have I Got News for You', it's hard to believe he was part of all that and, correct me if I'm wrong, I believe he still tours with them even now!

Jon, Yes in those days Rick was an alcoholic, but he kicked that and is now a BIG born again Christian, so make sure you dont meet him in a room on your own.

Big yes fan. My faves are Topographic, Relayer (almost post rock in places) , Close to the Edge, Time and a Word and the very first album.

I went to that one too!, at least I think I did, coz I remember seeing Yes there. But what stumps me is that I think it was Tony kaye playing keyboards, which wouldn't have been the case if it was the premier of Close to The edge ? so did they do two a prior Crystal Palace show ?

That's about how I feel, especially if I dare to try to make sense of the words! But I think what makes Yes work, are the arrangements and the level of musicianship. I recently added Tales of Topographic oceans tomy collection, I'm up to 6 now.

They're plaing 'le Zenith' in Paris in june, and I'vethreatened my wife with tickets, Ihaven't gone through with it yet tho'.

Perhaps my post wasn't clear so allow me to clarify: Clive Blackman said 'Tossers the lot of you' to people slagging off 'Yes', and I was just taking the opposite view. Apologies for the confusion. In future I will include direct quotes when referring to someone else's post before including my own comments - an oft tried and tested technique on this here Forum!

BTW, I think 'Yours is No Disgrace' was one of the reasons I haven't re-purchased Yessongs - prefer the studio version meself.
