52/82 Boards

I'm sure this would have been covered before, but why would you want to remove the phono boards from a 52 or 82. I don't have a vinyl source, so should I remove them?

No Naim amp comes with phono boards as standard, been this way for a while.

Pre amps are meant to improve when you take the boards out because the lower drain on the power supply helps a little elsewhere, and they must put some extra noise onto the supply lines.

I wonder if it is possible to hard wire input 1, I recently put the line level boards back in as I got a prefix. Might this add to sound quaility - assuming the line level boards maybe microphonic?

David......yes you should remove them, and replace them with "straight through" boards (£30)

I use a prefix for my turntable. removing the boards makes life easier for the supercap and reduces noise. The audible effects are small but worthwhile. I also replaced the BNCs for RCAs. I can now use my (non-Naim) CDP into input 1 using any type of interconnect, with RCA plugs.

One final point, I also understand that the power supply to input 1 (phono) is more "optimised" than the others....(maybe Naim will correct me if I am mistaken here)

Hi Laurie,

If you look at the date of my original post, you'll see it was written some time ago. I removed them from my 52. Currently using input 2 for my CDSII - should I be using input 1?

I take pride in russerecting a 2.5 year old thread!!

David I had the same thoughts as you, but decided not to because I would have to change the 5 pin to din that came with the CDS2 into a 5 pin to 2 BNCs and I thought that might degrade the sound quality. I've currently got my 05 tuner on 1, phono on 2, CDS2 on 3, cassette deck (wossat) on 4, DAT on 5 and headline on 6 alternatng with a Marantz cd recorder.

Fozzy......no, insofar as sound quality is concerned. However, ,from what you described I would guess that input 1 on your 102 would be unusable. My understanding of the "olive" preamps was that all were sold with straight through(line level) boards on input 1.Phono boards of your choice were then available as a (paid for) extra. The exception to this was the 52, which was supplied with "k" boards already fitted. Sounds to me like you should call up your dealer and ask for the straight through boards.

For people with a Naim CDP, they may find that the compromise of using DIN to phono interconnect between CDP and preamp, outweighs any gains made by choosing input 1 over other inputs. In my own case, I use a non-Naim CDP anyway, so choosing input 1 on my 52 does not involve this compromise. I found small but worthwhile gains by choosing input 1 over the others. Inputs 4,5 & 6 are also a step down from 2 & 3 due to the tape loops.

Can this be confirmed because mine did not and I had to purchase a set of phono cards for mine.

My 52 came with a set of phono boards as standard (I bought it in 1997)

The NAC 52 came with phono boards as standard until the last couple of years of its life when phono boards were made an option.
