Where to hear Neats
Posted by: Steve Crouch on 24 March 2004
All this talk of Neat speakers esp Ultimatums has wetted my appetite and I want to fix an audition in London. Who do you recommend? I live in Brighton but believe my local dealer, AudioT, do not stock.
Cheers

Oranges and Lemons in Battersea, but their dem room's supposedly not up to much. Home audition is the way to go, I'm sure thay can oblige. Otherwise, there's always my place in SE London for the 9s and (I hope he doesn't mind me saying this) Alex G down the road's got MFS's. Which model(s) are you interested in?

I contacted Neat direct last October who said they would arrange a home demo direct from the factory of Ultimatum MFS5s or 7s.
They then Emailed me to say they had passed my details to Cymbiosis in Leicester and that was the last I heard.

I was in the same situation as you not that long ago. Contact Neat directly through their website and explain. I found them most helpful and a demo set was delivered to a dealer of my choice as there was no dealer in my immediate locality.
Good luck

I used Adventures in Hifi in Wigan where I bought my Nain equipment as well. However I could also have nominated Doug Brady in Warrington or Audio Council in Cheadle. The choice was mine and all these dealers were perfectly willing to cooperate. I found it genuinely hard to choose between all of them as all three were excellent.

I've just bought Infidelity's only pair of Neat speakers, a pair of MF5s.
Apparantently they weren't selling so they're not going to stock any demo units in the future.
Seems a little strange given their popularity with Naim owners, but there you have it.

Infidelity aren't going to stock Neat speakers for demo anymore??
How strange, and inconvenient!

Perhaps they were under the shadow of giant Nautili.

I went to Infidelity last Saturday to hear Naim and their MF5's. I was also going to hear them again this weekend, so to find that they've been sold without contacting me first is not good news. Bad attitude, chaps.

Richard,
I was actually asked if they could stay there for your demo, to which I agreed, so I assume that you heard them as planned.
Simon is bringing them over tonight with luck. I can't wait!
Jack.

Hi,Jack,
Congratulations on purchasing the MF5's. I own a pair and indeed they are fantastic speakers. Did you manage to get a home demo of them ? I was wondering what size room you will be using them in. The ports need a fair bit of breathing space behind them as well to fire on all cylinders.
I recently purchased a Nap 300. The MF5's do tend to boom ( on certain bass heavy) recordings, due to the limitations of my 13x12 room (suspended floor). This is a trait of my room and not the speaker and unfortunately the Nap 300, has not been of help in this situation ( unless its still settling down, bought used, switched on for 11 days), now resulting in overbearing bass. I say this not to to put you off the MF5's in anyway, but just out of curiousity about your room situation/set up.
Unfortunately, I am unable to bring the speakers any further out into the room or any further apart or closer together ( there's a TV inbetween them ).
There is no way I would want to part with them, as they are wonderful, but I'm clinging to the hope that some Mana Soundbases will save the day, or reluctantly accept that they are just too big sonically for my room and perhaps move down to the standmounts (MFS) instead.
Yours sobbingly,
Rod

Rod, why not try concrete paving slabs under your speakers, this seems to have cured booming problems for other people and if it doesn't work you have only spent £4 or so....

Hi,Guys,
Thanks for all your replies. While I've been away , I've just been doing some serious listening at louder than usual volumes to some Beck,Nirvana,U2,Costello and The Rolling Stones.
I've managed to bring the speakers ever so slightly closer together (without screwing up the TV picture)with some toe in and this seems to have helped quite a bit. The bass is now getting to pretty acceptable levels, whilst still allowing the music to keep the all important groove factor.(Previously the bass was slowing down the music). I think the higher than usual volumes has helped blow a few cobwebs off the Nap 300. I am using Fraim chips at the moment and when these were first introduced they helped enormously.I may still well consider Mana. I have tried concrete/paving slabs, but these did'nt work as well for me.
This ain't over yet by any means. Hold the Neat manual front page ! I was puckering my lips with Mick, putting on my thick rigged glasses with Elvis and considering the Samaritans for Kurt !
Mightily relieved,
Rod

Hi Jack
Thank you for letting me have that second listen, and congratulations! I was just disappointed that I wasn't contacted when they knew I had some interest.
How are you getting on with them?
Rich

Hello Chaps,
Just so you know, I should have a pair of the excellent Neat MF5's to demo by the end of April.
I'm based in St Albans, Herts.
