AE1's

Has anybody out in the ether tried the diminuative Acoustic Energy AE1 in a naim system? I am thinking of ,perhaps, going for standmounts in the near future as I feel they may suit my room better. On paper it looks like a good match, I have an LP12/cirKus/ittock/lingo/OC9 and CDi, 82/hi/250 and Keilidhs at the moment. I can spend up to £2k and will get a 2nd hi-cap if I go for a cheaper speaker.

I tried a friends pair years back - they are a great little speaker, though are real amp busters (I think later ones are a little more efficient). I managed to totally empty the 140 I then used, without ever really getting them to sound especially loud or powerful, your 250 should be ok though.

Very early AE1s did not have bi-wire posts. The bass driver was updated a few years back for the Mk II version, and is claimed to be a lot better, probably worth hunting down a pair with it fitted, they are about 150 quid each to update.

I am tempted by them as they are also spouse friendly. I will also audition SBL's and KEF ref. series. Has anyone out there tried ATC 20's, too power hungry perhaps?

I would also try to add Neat Petites and some Shahinians to the list. They do completely different things very well, and all work well with Naim. The new Linn Katan might be worth a listen too judging by rumours here, as are Royd speakers.
