Wife Proofing System!!!!!!1

Posted by: Potiriadis on 05 April 2004

I would like to start by saying I love my wife and I worship the ground she walks on. In fact I am sor far under the thumb, I haven't seen daylight for over a year. She is intelligent and resourceful in allbu two areas, anything electrical, anyhting involving the internal conbustion engine. The leatter is a subject for another forum, but the former is most pertinet when it comes to hi-fi.

We recently had Sky+ installed, and as a dutiful husband I programmed the machine to record a few choice programmes for her. I went out to the pub last Wednesday for the purpose of watching the desultory England game and letting her catch up on the chick flicks. about a third of the way into my second pint I received a phonecall, I was jsut able to make out the works "the hi-fi is f***ed". A long pause and then "did you hear me". Regaining my composure I then stepped outside the pub to try and diagnose the problem.

It turned out that the "info" button on the sky+remote has the same IR code as "tuner" on my NAIT. When watching movies sky etc.. the volume on the NAIT is set at 12:00 as it is used to drive the SBL's taking a feed from my surround amp. Naturaly when messers jagger and richards crooning exploded over the airwaves courtesy of Virgin FM and out of my SBL's the shock to my wife was considerable, (apparently our lovable mutt had a moinor bladder failure moment as well, hurray for laminate flooring). Apparently lots of random button pressing ensued untill the noise stopped (she still does not fully understand the programable remote). Then the phonecall re: f***ed Hi-fi. Everything sorted itself out (Thank god for a mullet system where the speakers can easily handle the loads, the conscequences of the same happening in a fourpack of 135's system does not bear thinking about!!).

Getting to the point eventualy my gripe is as follows, this kind of "no fault" accidents only ever happen when I am out of the house and my wife tries to watch TV orlisten to music. Bably and Child proofing your system are well accepted, but has anyone ever succesfully wife safed a system?? (This assumes that the lady in question has no interest about learning how to use thye system as it is)

Held desperateley needed to prevent mut soiling himself again.

Help Bunnys everywhere!!!!!

No Seriously, everywhere!!!!!!!

A rather inelegant solution would be cover the IR window on the amp but this assumes that you will not use the sky+ and the hi-fi at the same time?

or mute the Nait

or get a 72/hi and separate power amp.

No remotes, no interference! Easy to use, one knob to select input on for volume.

Oh, and it would sound good too.

My wife doesn't like remotes. Not that it stops her using all five like a gunslinger. She even carries the CD remote about so she can replay favorite tracks.

She can have the video switched on from cold & record snatches of satellite TV programmes from either receiver within seconds knowing I'll be interested in the subject matter.

Her only real weakness lies in her taste in music and the volume required. A steady 100db on the SPL meter brings a whole new meaning to "Music while you work"! Our giant SVS sub cheerfully tolerates her cranking that to 12 o'clock to get a few extra dBs of impact on the drums & bass! Thank god I'm allowed to be at work while she's playing her music. Don't use the Nait as a surround amp but go to Richer Sounds and get a cheap surround amp and speakers. Teach your wife to use it for TV and for playing CD's. Then keep the sistem safely muted and untouched by her and the kids. If she has no interest (like my wife), she won't care less what she plays her CD's on, as long as she can when she wants to.
Your story made my blood run cold.

a mate of mine has Meridian dsp6000 loudspeakers full activ jobs easily capable of 118DB. he was going through a "bad patch" with his better half and was listening to some music at 2am very very low so as not to disturb his sleeping beauty the volume on his pre amp goes from 1-99 he was listening at no3 he decided to be even more thaughtfull and turn it down via his remote 3--2---1-----99! apparantly it nearly blew the windows out!!

We had a Musical Fidelity A370 power amp which used to burn out the ballast resistors on power up very loudly and percussively with lots of smoke - My wife discovered this feature and experienced it several times. It only happened once to me.
