Computer Viruses

Posted by: NB on 30 March 2004

I had an interesting e-mail in my inbox this morning. It was from myself and it had an attachment with it.

Now as hard as I tried I couldn't remember sending myself an e-mail last night.

Naturally I have deleted it from my e-mail without opening it.

Has anyone had the same experience?

Is this a sign that I have a virus on my computer, I have run my virus scanner and it has come up negative.

Suggestions?

This is not uncommon, judging by recent comments seen elsewhere. I had one from myself last week with an attachment. It also seems that the AV software suppliers have had a tough time keeping up with the rate of mutation of some of the viruses, with the result that you might receive an infected attachment before they've released the relevant virus signature file. Some AV suppliers are now doing daily updates to counter some threats. Important to keep up to date. Also important to make sure that your Virus Scanner 'engine' version is still supported. If not it might fail to spot viruses even with the correct sig-file.
