£400 modest Upgrade

I have about £400GBP to spend on the HiFi and I have shortlisted the following items which I may or may not be able to get for this money, what do you all think?

1. Some sort of standard spec s/h LP12 as an upgrade from my very old Planar 3. I could buy an LP12 without arm and keep my new RB250 for the time being (I know this is not a favorite arm for a linn but it would get me on the LP12 ladder.

2. Could I afford a second hand Michell Gyro without arm for £400 - if so where do I look?

3. Upgrade the 42.5 to a second hand olive 72 - this would benefit all sources but is 72/hi that much better than 42.5/hi (this option may not cost all that much as I think I could get a 72 for around £380 and I could probably get £120 for the 42.5)

4.Subject to resale values - swap my chrome 160 for some sort of 250 (but I love the 160)

As this would be kind of a present from the other half, things like cables, stands, carts or other less tangable items are not welcomed as she will want to see somthing for her money!

LP12s aren't the be all and end all of records you know (personally I loathe them, but I'll be shot down for that!).

I last saw a Gyro (Mk 2) for £350 in 1998 - it needed a new bearing but had a RB300 on it! It was in Freeads (and wasn't stolen!), and when I took my Rega Planar3 in for an upgrade, Ian Mott (Audio-T) had that very same Gyro in for servicing - some lucky sod got a total bargain!

I'd say if you're REALLY lucky, you might see one for £400 but don't hold your breath...

The 72 might be a good idea - they look much cooler than the Heath Robinson 42.5... Wink

Simon,

If your main listening is vinyl, i would suggest buying the LP12, I had a 42.5/hicap/110 for 19 years and always upgraded my LP12 to my present set up of LP12/lingo/ekos/akiva. Can't comment on the 72 as i have recently upgraded to stageline/202/old hi-cap/200

Or stretch your budget to include

1) the new motor kit for the P3
2) a 250.

I, too, loved my 140, but one moment of listening to a 250 made me forsake it. It's only a machine, after all. :-)

I suspect there are and were a lot of good 'tables made, so it might be wise to search for an LP12, Roksan, Townshend, Michell, etc - but you're most likely to find an LP12....

Regards.
