Elanor McEvoy - Early Hours

Posted by: Stephen H on 13 April 2004

Hi Folks,

Anyone else got the new Elanor McEvoy album yet?

I've only had the chance to listen to it once so far, but I like it so far. Not quite as instrumentally sparse as Yola, and her Irish accent seems to be coming through a bit more.

Regards,
Steve.

Yeah I got it.
It's good. Good recording. I'm impressed with the Irish accent. Good thing she's not trying to hide it.

The photos don't quite sit well with me though. She's really growing into a bit of a lesbian IMO.

Hi joe90,

It's funny you should mention the photos, because I thought that there was remarkably little difference between any of them. It's almost as if she has a 'I'm being photographed' expression which she used on all of them.
Can't say I particularly registered your impression of them though!

The accent thing is quite rare too, I can only think of The Proclaimers as an example of a similarly strong accent whilst singing (albeit Scots). Even Shane from the Pogues didn't sound that Irish.

Anyone who's got Yola shouldn't be dissapointed in this one though.

Regards,
Steve.

True, I'd forgotten all about her!

Her solo album is pretty good I reckon. The track 'Chardonnay' is a real ear worm. I couldn't get it out of my head for days. (Damn, it's back in there again!!!).

Steve

Leaving aside the quality of the lyrics and musicianship; has anyone else done the cd v. sacd test on this hybrid disc?

It is weird, on my system anyway. Some tracks, the simpler arrangements seem almost identical, and others, the more "busy" ones sound different - like it is 2 different mixes, which it could of course be. The balance of instruments in the mix is certainly distinguishable, less sibilance on vocals.

Overall, the sacd replay has arguably more detail in the treble and is more refined, less harsh. That said, apart from track 2, I can listen in either format with equal enjoyment.

cheers

Forget the above.

It is always a good idea to ensure the player is correctly configured for SACD replay before you try it.

I had the player on CD direct which produces some odd aural effects when replaying SACD.

So CD direct off: SACD presentation is different - instruments and vocals do not necessarily appear in the same part of the soundstage as CD; there is often a different balance of volume between instruments and voice.

Having heard it in each mode a few times, I prefer the CD replay on this disc.

cheers

I found 'Yola' pretty boring overall except when it became annoying so cannot see me buying this one. There is a big interview with her in Hi-Fi + which has lot of pictures of her pulling a wierd half smile grimace. I think she looks more like a social worker as opposed to a female taxi driver. The 'interview' is rather fawning by the way.

I'm listening to Early Hours now, just got it. On first listen I like it, perhaps more than Yola. Like the trumpet on the first song!

That said, I don't quite understand hifi+/Monsieur Gregory's adoration. It's good but imho not that good.

Yes, I agree the hifi+ photos are pretty awful. Looks like she's thinking: "I just wanna get this promotional shite over with and go home. Hurry up with that bloody camera!"

Haven't bought the new one yet, preferred the earlier stuff to Yola.
It will be a pity if she is now coming over as rather precious/bored in interviews. When I spent time with her (last year) she was absolutely divine and first born will concur

Hi Malcolm,

To be fair, she didn't come over precious or bored in the interview, it was just the photos that made her look that way. She was very enthusiastic about the recording of the new album.

I've had another couple of listens to it now, and while it isn't as immediately enjoyable as I found Yola, I still think its pretty good.

Regards,
Steve.
