Buildings Insurance
Posted by: garyi on 21 January 2005
Hello there folks.
God willing we will be moving into our new house next week, a question on insurance.
The building is non standard, infact its a combination of brick (an extension) and cob walls.
The cob bit seems to be scaring insurance companies and some won't even quote.
Has anyone else got cob walls in the UK and can recommend an insurer?
Cheers

Cob walls are a west country eccentricity.
The major problem is damp due to either poor foundations or an old roof.
I believe the National Farmers Insurance (NFU) offer a good broker service in this area.
I was told that snippet by a former employee of theirs.

Cheers Mick.
I think Sheila has got a qoute from AXA which is reasonable.
The combination of naim equipment and cob walls appears to have shit these people up good and proper. Tesco gave up half way through the quote and More Than wanted to refer to their underwriters regarding the hifi before we even got to the cob.
Ah well, weekend is here.

Gry - Have a look at Hiscox - do a Google for them, they do take a broader view compared to some of the other companies

Someone has to ask, so it may as well be me.
Q. What IS a Cob wall ?
(Don't forget to double-check that your new insurance policy covers your gear against lightning strike).
BOR
OK,OK, no-one needs to die. Cob walls - Walls constructed from clay & straw. Hard to believe in this day and age, but sounds pretty cool.

A yes fair point.
I guess perhaps it is a wiltshire thing because I assumed everywhere had them.
Its a wall built of clay, straw and soil.

Before those that know no better start sniggering, some of the oldest buildings are made from this and the one we have purchased apparently held Napoleon Soldiers (some thing I am yet to verify)

Where do you live?
Floating on whatever is hardly useful when asking such questions

Hi guys I tried to post a perfectly reasonable response here yesterday and I was informaed my post needed to be checked by a moderator, so I really don't know what that is about.
Anyway cob is a building material made from soil, straw and clay its very robust and allows lots of creative freedom as its normally made with the hands.
Martin, currently I am kinda flouting but come a week today will be living in Amport a small village just outside Andover and joined with Moxton.
It has the benifit of a pub about 2 minutes walk which serve a reasonable pint of courage best or directors. On a Sunday I can also take the longer walk to a nicer pub.
Being a village kinda guy I have to say I can't wait there are many trails in the area for walks and mountain biking (Anyone want to buy a brand new racer!)
