I have a problem

I have to choose between the CD5 and the CD5i
I've heard a demo today and the difference were very small. Both sound great. Only the 5 was a little bit more "open" and detail.
Butt the price of € 650,- more for the CD5 is that usefull.
And you can up-grade the 5 with the FLATCAP.
WHAT WILL I DO ???

Robert, read my recent posting. A cd5 +fc2 is a thing of beauty. If you've got access to the funds you won't regret it.The 5i is a good machine but I've found the cd5/fc2 gives so much more detail in all parts of the sound.

Hi there Robbert,
I agree that 650,- euro is (for most of us) still a lot of money.
Still,...if you're quite sure that you want to upgrade in the future, than I'd go for the CD5.
I'm sure the CD5i will also sound great, but if you want to upgrade someday, you're on a dead end street with the CD5i.
Then you'll probably have to sell it again, end loose some serious money.
With a CD5 you can later connect a flatcap-2 that will also power your Nait-5!
So, to say in Dutch...dan sla je 2 vliegen in 1 klap!
So, if you can afford it (without getting into 'trouble' with misses Fireman
) I'd go with the CD5.
regards,
Alco

You're a Forum member....
Buy the CD5
You'll now need the FC2, CDX2, XPS2..........
Oh bugger it - just get the CDS3

No, Robbert is too young as a poster to buy a CDS3 now. He must ask us, hesitates, wants to be sure... to buy a CDX2 before and do the posts again for the XPS and again for the CDS3. Otherwise, we and the forum are useless.

Manu
I was only trying to be concise......
And he is only 4 years younger than me. I don't want to seem cruel, but I don't want to wait until I am retired before being "allowed" to own something of that value
My Naim dealer never mentioned the age requirement last time I visited........
Whatever next - Naim Zimmers ?

It has been said often on this board to LISTEN FOR YOURSELF. Not putting you off, but ultimately YOU have to live with it.
I've not heard the CD5i, so take this w/a grain of salt. I have however owned the CD5 w/an FC2 and a hi cap. I have also owned the CDX2. All of the listed combinations were w/ an 82/super,250, stageline/hi, and w/a Nait5, and a 112/150.
After all the messing around I much prefer the CD5/hi to a naked CD5 or even a naked CDX2! I spent the better part of a year sorting out my disc front end. In the end I cannot live with the dark tonality of the Pacific Microsonics chip in the CDX2 (although I have never liked the chip in anything I've ever heard it in.)
Many people love the CDX2, and my not liking it doesn't make me OR them "wrong" or "deaf", but it should be obvious how important making a qualified buying decision is to YOUR sensibilities.
A CD5 has an upgrade path that in the end can leave you with a very compelling and musical front end. Our hi fi paths always end somewhere even if that place is a zero bank balance!
Listen, then buy the one you like the best. Merely buying something because it can be "improved on" at a later date strikes me as unfulfilling ---- unless that is the one you like the best.

I totally agree with Travec. I have also just purchased a CD5i with a Nait 5i and Intro 2 speakers. The system sounds absolutely fantastic and is getting better all the time. One of the reasons I went for this combo rather than the CD5 route was because I do not want to upgrade the system in the future or if I do have sufficient funds and the desire to do so I will simply sell and replace.
Naim have been quite clever in my opinion in targeting a market that wants audiophile quality sound at a reasonable price without a black hole of liability waiting to engulf them in the future!!

Hi Robbert,
whatever you'll choose, cd5 or cd 5i, you should buy a DIN\DIN interconnect cable (maybe a naim blacksnaic)..so, let me know if you're going to sell your Chord Cobra2 RCA\DIN,ok?
Thanks,
bye

Far easier to upgrade the hi-fi, but may end up actually costing you more money than upgrading the missus!
