Upgrade Path - Active
Posted by: Roger40 on 22 April 2004
My current system is CD5/Flatcap2, NAC102/SNAPS NAP250 (olive) into SBLs.
I'm just about to upgrade the SNAPS to a HICAP and the 250 to two 135s.
Two questions please:
1. What difference am I likely to expect ?
2. In terms of further upgrade, what Active cross over will I need for 4 135s ?
Hope I get more response from this mail than my last

Cheers
Roger
PS. Why am I just a junior member?

cos I just joined ?

Roger,
To go active with a pair of 135's you will need a snaxo2-4 and a hi-cap to power it. You will also need the SBL's converting to active mode.
However by adding a pair of 135's I fear you will do nothing more than create a mullet where the power amp's are for to much for the CD and pre-amp.
I would seriously look at up-graing the CD player and pre-amp first. The minimum to consider would be a CDX/XPS and 82.
A CDX/XPS/82/Hi/250 would present a much more balaced sistem than a CD5/flat/102/hi/250.

How much would I be looking to pay for a second hand CDX/XPS and 82 ?
I'm too late to stop my upgrade now to the HICAP and two 135s as I have done the deal costing me £1500. Been better to ask the question first (whoops!) just hope it doesn't sound disasterous (gulp!)

Cheers

Roger,
you'll be upgraded from Junior Member with your 4th post, IIRC.

Roger,
Its always better to ask the question first but now you have upgraded just sit back and enjoy the music.
You should hear big differces with a pair of 135's and there's more to come if you up-grade the CD and pre-amp. Have a look on Pink fish media for second hand prices.

Yes, I'm glad too, thanks for your help (NB). I'll hold off on the 82 and the XPS just for now.

Yes, I will do with pleasure (NB).
Of course all this has caused my next concern. Locating the new equipment as I will now run out of shelf room.
The two options seem to be stack the 135s straight on top of one another, or the 102 and the CDX on top of one another ? Is there a preference to whether 135s should be split or the 102/CDX ? Hopefully, I don't have to get a new stand straight away.

Roger,
A fraim would be ideal but is expensive.
Ideally its best to keep the power amps as far away from the CDX and 102 as possible.
The other thing to think about is heat build up. The 135's will need plenty of air circulating around them to keep them cool.
