Grateful Dead live al***s
Posted by: Kevin-W on 02 December 2004
Hello everybody peeps
Have been listening to my three Dead live CDs (Live/Dead, Europe 72 and Without a Net) recently and have been enjoying them immensely.
Does anyone have any other live album recommendations? There are quite a few, and I know some of them are supposed to be well ropey. And there are squillions of Dick's Picks. Are any particularly outstanding?
Also, does anyone know if the Dead's gig at Wembley on Hallowe'en 1990 has been released? I was there and it was todally ossome!
Thanks in advance

Howard,
I did the same last night and eventually found a piece of software on 30 day trial which let me convert to WAV. I'm at work at the moment and don't have the URL to hand but I googled on SHN and found it with not too much hassle. Obviously a piece of freeware is preferable though. I'm sure there'll be something out there and if you find it be sure to post it here!

Can't answer for Windoze but on the Mac [OS/X] xACT - the link is on the etree link Nick posted - works like a dream - all you do is drag the 'shn' files [which are contained within the whole show 'zip'] onto the xACT icon and click decode and tell it where to put the files - you can choose to output in either WAV or AIFF [almost identical, AIFF is same as WAV but with addtional Mac information in file header] - then away to Toast [i guess it would be Nero on PC]...don't forget to set the gaps between tracks to 0 and to set the software to burn DAO [Disk at Once] not TAO [Track at Once] and you are done...

I can't even load the .shn conversion S/W from etree. Just for a change my download don't do what the site says. It comes back with c:\windows\system32\autoexec.nt the system file is not suitable to operate with dos and windows" or somesuch.
Any ideas?

Apart from "Ripple", which is beautiful, I've completely failed to understand the attraction of the Grateful Dead for years. So, I downloaded the 1990 show mentioned above. Sorry, I still completely fail to get it.
I love great psychedelia but I can't abide noodling. Can anyone name one Dead record (just one) that I should try before giving up on them again?

Thanks Nick. I've been meaning to buy American Beauty for about 25 years because of "Ripple" but have never got round to it. It would make sense to start (and possibly finish) there.
Interstellar Space isn't noodling, as any fule kno. It's the concentrated essence of the sublime, obviously. Go and stand in the corner at once until you repent. ;-)

I could go off you, you know.
Is it just IS you have, ahem, "issues" with, or is it Trane in general? I feel a conversion attempt coming on. ;-)

I'll see how I get on with American Beauty, if it has anything on it that I like apart from "Ripple" I'll go mad and try Live/Dead too.

Kind of Blue is hugely overrated, so not liking it is possibly a sign of good taste.

That sounds like Paul Gonsalves on Diminuendo and Crescendo in Blue, it absolutely rocks.
Based on what I know about what you like I can think of dozens of things that I'm pretty confident will rock your world, as the young used to put it. PT me your address and I'll make you an xmas present sampler out of some good stuff.

Downloaded this show from your link the other day. Even with broaband, it took 6 hours for the lossless version, but it was well worth it - fantastic stuff, as good as I remember it.
The opening trio of "Help On The Way"/"Slipknot!"/"Franklin's Tower" is magnificent, there's a superb "Bird Song" and "Werewolves" is as wonderful as everyone remembers it being.
I was particularly impressed with the sound quality - it sounded excellent on my Mac through MacAmp Lite X, but when I put it into iTunes via Shorten, burnt it onto CD and played it through the hi-fi, I was really blown away! Amazing stuff.
Thanks for posting the link, guys, but the thing is now, I've been bitten by the bug and want to download another show.
What would you recommend? (Only one or two, please!)
Thanks in advance
Kevin

Kevin,
21-9-1972, as recommended previously in the thread by Leopold. I finally got around to burning it and it is truly special, particularly if you are a fan of this era -- and what Deadhead doesn't ike '72?
HELP: can anyone tell me how to configure iTunes to burn at a 1:1 ratio?
thx,
daniel

I use a Mac, but I presume it's pretty similar if you use a Windoze PC; all you do is go to Preferences, click on the "burn" icon and there's a small scroll menu that lets you set the burn speed. Just set it to 1x. It takes about 20-22 minutes to burn a disc but it's worth it.
I've read the reviews of the Philly show, seen the set list and I'm going for it. As the show is 1.3 GB, I'm going to set it to download overnight!

Thanks Kevin,
No sooner had I hit "Post Reply" than a voice in my head spoke up:'Preferences, dumbass.' -- I think is what it said.
I'm listening to The Philly Spectrum now and it's great; sonics are not perfect, but very good for what they are. In my haste I burned the show at the default speed which was 'fastest possible.' I then went back and burned just the 3rd disk (w/ Darkstar) at 1x, and I think it's better. Also, downloaded Leopold's other pick -- 27-8-72 -- and gave the 2nd set a quick listen. It's also very good, with a phenomenal "Playin'."
Cheers,
daniel

kevin,
glad you got and liked the show - and yes it is extremely addictive - i used to hate the whole blanks and postage bit but downloading from the archive is so easy - and so many of the shows are in such good quality...sorry it took 6 hours though - what speed broadband? I have 1MB [which means i d/l at 117kb/s which does a 1 GB show in about 2 hours 40]...if you are using a Mac I recommend iGetter [or Speed Download] both are faster than Safari...
as to other shows: well it depends which era but I would recommend 7th and 8th May 1977 -- both are wonderful and sound wonderful [as the Dead will not release them as they don't have the master tapes, that said they did put out the Dancin' from the 8th but it was no better quality than from the archive]...the 8th May isn't the best show they played [as some have claimed but it does feature the best scarlet>fire and the best Morning Dew, also my favourite jerry row jimmy solo]...there are many versions of 8th may up there but the one to get is the standard rob eaton re-master [the file is 'gd77-05-08.sbd.hicks.4982.sbeok.shnf_shn']...mind you could try the 'surround sound' version...
i also recommend 24/02/1974 - only set 2 exists in good quality [file: 'gd74-02-24.sbd.windsor.199.sbefail.shnf_shn'] but this has a really good dark star>morning dew
the run 9, 10 and 11 November 1973 run at the winterland are amongst the dead's best shows [though the sound is not as good as above - more comparable with the 21/9/72 philly show mentioned earlier in thread]
moving to the 80s [which sound much weaker up to 85 because of the use of cassette rather than reel to reel on the soundboard] the three shows at the greek theatre 21, 22 and 23 May 1982 are great and actually sound like Healy sneaked a reel in [actually you can tell on a CDS3 that it is cassette but much better sounding than normal]
moving to post jerry's near death experience you already have a good show in the london one but also try Miami 26/10/89 - again only second set exists on soundboard but it is well worth it - the only 80s/90s dark star which really compares [i think] with the golden age...
moving on although post 91 is largely a sad experience do try MSG 14/10/94 and 17/10/94 - the 14th features an amazing scarlet>fire [the omega to the 8/5/77's alpha] -- it is staggering to hear jerry so good and inspired this late...
finally if you look the archive will say that 10th June 1973 is most d/led show and that is with good reason - 4 hours plus of the dead at their 73 peak [which for me was THE peak]...
most of the reviews on the archive are fair and so just browsing brings great shows forward - also sometimes it is nice to just pick one at random...
finally try getting all three volumes of the taping compendium
hope it helps,
Leopold

Leopold, thanks for the tips - the September 72 gig took 7 hours to download, so I'll look at another browser as I have 1MB broadband too (someone also told me it's best to download Dead archive shows from about 5AM UK time because America's still asleep then!).
I'm going to live with the 9/72 show for a week or so (I can't wait to hear it!) and then try some of the 73s you mention. This is a serious habit, and such wonderful, wonderful music too!
And to think when I went to see the Dead all those years ago I only went on suffrance - because I thought they were a bunch of clapped-out old hippies! My ears and eyes were certainly opened that Hallowe'en night at Wembley, and my ears are being opened all over again thanks to the fab Deadheads on this forum!
I'll report back later!
Cheers

Well, that's the sort of belligerence I've come to expect from Texas nowadays. Check out "Workingman's Dead" Cowboy.

YEEEEEEEEEEE HAAAAAAAAAAW!
Don't mess with Texas young buck!
(BTW, I'm NOT a Humvie driving Bush supporter)
Workingman's Dead is nice but you should check out Reckoning as it's LIVE and way better. Honestly, Just buy Dick's Pick's and leave well enough alone...pardner.
I've got well over 500 Dead soundboards (college was a blur, maybe that's why I now sell Hi-Fi?) that have proven to me that their studio output is beyond lame. You can ask any LIVING member of the Dead and they'll agree with me.
Peace,
B-Diddy

Up here in the freaked-out Pacific Northleft we don't ask the living, we channel the dead. I had my pediatrician-naturapath-family-medium channel Jerry on my last visit for an ingrown toenail -- it's cheaper that way, my insurance wont cover this sort of thing -- and you know what, you're right. He said "Go To Heaven" sucked. Can't reccommend it.
I couldn't agree with you more. And I should have learned by now not to take my fight to the good people of Austin.
Shalom pardner,

I wouldn't know how to begin to download (or should that be "rip"?) something off the GD catalogue, but thanks to the kindness of a member of this Forum - thanks, Steve, you know who you are - I now have a 3CD set of the GD's famous performance at the Wembley Arena on Halloween of 1990, which I attended.
It was weird to hear again something that I had heard in person almost 15 years ago. And yet, try as I might, it sounded "quiet' or "tame", compared to my memory, as played over my loudspeakers.
So I thought back, and remembered that my ears were ringing with "white noise" for some hours after I left the show. So I turned off the speakers and turned up my Headline/Grado RS1 combo at least twice as loud as they've ever been before, and there I had the blistering sound I remembered on "All Along The Watchtower" and "Werewolves of London". It couldn't be done over loudspeakers, otherwise the neighbours would rebel, nor at any length over the 'phones, otherwise one's ears would start to bleed. But it was fr*gging marvellous, and I'm off to repeat the formula.
One last thing: where did the GD get "Werewolves of London" from? I'm not a complete Deadhead, but that seemed to come out of nowhere. Can anyone shed any light?

Werewolves of London was written by Warren Zevon.
Posted on: 03 March 2005 by Kevin-W
Graham
WWOL is the most famous song by the late Warren Zevon. It was recorded in 1978 and was a top 50 hit that year. It was famously used in Scorsese's The Color Of Money.
The Dead performed it a number of times.
BTW, Nick L and Leopold, if you're out there, thanks for recommending the ashington 73 gig - it really is a stonker! Part of the Dead's charm is their looseness, but here they're very tight, almost funky at times (They Love Each Other, Eyes Of The World, Sugar Mag etc). Highly recommended gig for anyone trying to find out what all the fuss is about re The Dead (be warned - the gig is 4.5 hours long!!!)
Cheers!

"WWOL" mentions Lee Ho Fook. Had dinner there last Saturday night - by no means the greatest Chinese to be found in London! As a WZ fan though, had to give it a try!
