Grateful Dead live al***s

Posted by: Kevin-W on 02 December 2004

Hello everybody peeps

Have been listening to my three Dead live CDs (Live/Dead, Europe 72 and Without a Net) recently and have been enjoying them immensely.

Does anyone have any other live album recommendations? There are quite a few, and I know some of them are supposed to be well ropey. And there are squillions of Dick's Picks. Are any particularly outstanding?

Also, does anyone know if the Dead's gig at Wembley on Hallowe'en 1990 has been released? I was there and it was todally ossome!

Thanks in advance

My pleasure, Graham.

Glad I found a CDr your CDS2 could play,

strange thing is, both the disc that wouldn't play, and the three GD discs that will play, are all Memorex!

kevin, is this the concert you mean?

Date: June 9th, 1973
Venue: Robert F. Kennedy Stadium
Location: Washington, DC

Basil,

I have it as the 10th of June! But it may be that due to the length of the concert, it's quite possible the started on the 9th and finished on the 10th! Whatever, it's brilliant, I can see why it's the most downloaded Dead gig of all.

Hi there Kevin,

they both are!

glad you are enjoying the shows you have downloaded - GDStore are starting to sell the existing dick's picks and other vault releases as downloads and are promising to add other [not commercially released] shows much as phish have done for last couple of years but this will means shows 'disappearing' from the archive than at a quicker rate than just with the normal cd releases...

i realise i never answered an earlier post - the taping compendium is a three volume [four if you count the largely superfluous annex] set which lists almost all dead shows for which a recording exists - gives full details and a review [about 2000 shows in total] - although i would disagree with many things in it it is still a wonderful resource - open a volume at random [or choose a year] read through, mark a couple of shows which seem interesting and then download them - how much better can life be than that!

it seems to be out of print at the moment but you can get them for reasonable price via albris or abe - buy from america [despite postage] as they are treated as 'rare collectables' by some booksellers in uk - also beware ebay where they regularly fetch over $100 a volume...

while you are looking deadbase [either edition 10 or 11] is very useful - setlists from every show they played with a whole host of other stuff [sort of like wisdoms almanac - is that the cricket book?] - you can use deadbase online [www.deadbase.com] and in similar vein deadlists [www.deadlists.com] but even with the online resource i still like to have the book...

Hi Leopold

I have downloaded about 20 shows so far,, based on your and Nick's recommendations - seriously addictive stuff! I have even got some very sceptical friends into the Dead as a result!

I have also got into downloading (and have started uploading from my collection) non-Dead shows via bit torrent - have picked up some great Can, Kraftwerk, New Order, Zep and da Floyd. It's amazing the stuff that's out there on places like easytree.
