Phil, these things remain the best source if you wish to optimise sound quality in a portable unit. Sadly, sound quality is of diminishing importance to the market led lemmings.
Do your mum a favour and buy her a Sony or Panasonic CD walkman, they seem to be the best. The more you pay, the smaller it can be.

Snigger, yes I am a lemming being able to import many many CDS uncompressed into a unit smaller than a CD portable makes me a lemming.
The fact is portable CD players are being given away with other purchases, the market for this product is dead in the water.
However there was a Sony one a few years ago that looked pretty cool.

This was a hi-fi forum. That means high fidelity, not how many songs you can fit in a fag packet. If there is an i-poddy thing that can really match a CD source and store hundreds of CDs, then I want to know about it, but I haven't heard one yet.

phillips have just release a model that has an integrated DAB radio. cost is around GBP 130.
for a non audiophile who is used to CDs and also doesnt turn on a computer very often, this couldb be a very useful device.
