Pink Floyd - Final Cut - remaster
Posted by: rgame666 on 09 May 2004
Hi,
I only found this by accident but now I think it is possibly the best sounding CD I have.
The bass is wonderfully deep and smooth with very little noise in the background.
My only hope is who ever did the remastering keeps doing it!!
Regards
Richard

I agree. I always liked this album but it tends to get slated.

I've never heard it, but after reading this months Uncut magazine, I am tempted to try it. It is the only PF album with RW that I don't have.

It's obviously a bit of a love hate thing. I think it's one of their best and only just falls short of DSOTM, WYWH and The Wall for me.
It's clearly a bit depressing, and maybe self indulgent, but it's more focused than much of Floyd's stuff, and has proper songs and stuff. Some of the lyrics are excellent (even if the subject matter is a bit dated in some parts). Gilmour still sprinkles in some stunning guitar breaks even though he's less previlent than elsewhere.
If you like 'The Wall' then The Final Cut whould also be well liked. If you think the Floyd peaked with Pipers.. and it was down hill thereafter then I'd probably give it a miss.

Its an excellent album. Roger Water's lyrics are so underrated. The topics of the album are also incredibly relevant today. I shall be replacing my worn cassette with the new remaster.

Listened to the album last night after being prompted by this thread (on vinyl). Great stuff, very well recorded. Gunner's Dream and Two Suns in the Sunset are two of Floyds' best tracks with superb sax solos.

Anyone know if its going to be available on vinyl?

Its about this time on a pink floyd thread that I normally say, "but Animals is one I keep coming back to"...

Yes, that lead on "Dogs" is colossal.
Final Cut is under-rated. Perhaps overshadowed by The Wall. That Waters is merely subdued and not burnt out after the Wall project is often forgotten.
I wonder if the current world situation is going to screw him up even more. If he can outdo Amused To Death, we'll all be amazed. But if anyone can do it, he can.

Have to say that 'Amused to Death' is my favourite Floyd/Waters album. Simply fantastic.
After reading this thread I went back and had a listen to 'Final Cut'. I had forgotten how good it was, very depressing, but still very good.
Music should be 'original' and played 'live'. No more overpaid Karaoke singers.

I may have to investigate Amused to Death. What is it similar to? Pros and Cons? Radio Kaos? What?

Simon,
I would say that there are elements of 'Final Cut', 'Wall' & 'Kaos' in Amused to Death. I think it's Roger's stongest and most coherent piece of writing so far. Jeff Beck plays in the style he used on his 'Guitar Shop' record (Fantastic Album Cover BTW) and the whole production is Stellar. If you have a Vinyl source, seek out a copy as it's a total analogue recording and one of the best. For CD you can obtain a bargain Here

Isn’t the “Final Cut” basically cuttings from “The Wall”?
In the movie “The Wall” Pink is in a bathroom stall drinking out of the toilet writing a song from the “Final Cut”.

Not really. The Wall film was made about the same time as he was writting material for the Final cut so that's maybe why that was included, Additionally 'When the tigers broke free' was issued as a single after The Wall, but included in the wall film and is now included on the remastered Final Cut.
The theams of the wall and Final Cut are related but different. The Wall is about 'Pink's' isolation from reality caused by amongst other things: His fathers death in the war; His mothers over protection; inflexible schooling; adulterous wife etc.
The final Cut is more just about the futility of War, and the subtitle 'Requiem for the post war dream' sums it up really.
FWIW - I'm not really a fan of Amused to Death, I think 'pro's and cons' is the best Water's solo album.

I am/was [was = like old stuff, am = buy whatever they produce today] a Pink Floyd fan and I thought 'The Final Cut' was basically lots of stuff they left out of 'The Wall' because it was not that good. After I bought this I stopped buying Pink Floyd without hearing them. Later I bought 'The Division Bell' [not really Pink Floyd] -- one lives in eternal hope -- but now I ignore them.
I would advise anyone interested in Pink Floyd to listen to earlier stuff and if they like it maybe buy this. But don't buy this as your first album because you will not buy a second one.
By the way -- does anyone ever listen to side-4 of 'The Wall'. I don't ....

Side 4 is integral to The Wall.
Or so I thought.

Hello Vik
".....

......"
Agree. It is part of the story but I don't like the music [especially the bit with the Judge].

Just got the CD remaster and was intrigued at how different the mix is to the original vinyl.

From the day it was released I loved the Final Cut. However I must say that I think Amused is a better album musically as well as lyrically.
I have The Final Cut on vinyl and CD. My question is is it worth purchasing the remastered CD? Is it sonically that different than the original CD?
