Help wanted re system & dedicated mains supply

Posted by: doctorf on 08 June 2004

This is my first posting. (what a great forum!) I shall try to be brief but I'll try to tell the whole story.

I didn't touch my system for about 15 years. It consisted of Linn Sondek, Valhalla, Ittok, Asaka, NAC42, NAP 160, Arcam 7 cd (about 2 yrs old) & Linn Keilidh speakers.
My son was given a vinyl for his birthday last month so I decided it was time for an upgrade. I bought an NAC72, a flatcap (1) and had the whole lot serviced/recapped by Moorgate Audio in Sheffield. I then bought a home-made stand which cost the guy about £1500 to build. Basically there was no improvement!! I then went and bought some oldish SBLs which had upgraded 'big' speaker units. The system sounded much better. I then realised that my speaker cable was Linn K400 and not naim so I have just changed to NAC A5 - again more improvement!! I now need to replace my cd player but funds are limited - I have negotiated to buy a Roksan Attessa and will get that in the next month or two.
I would appreciate any comments re the above!!

My real question is whether a dedicated spur would improve things. At present I am using a normal ring main and a Belkin anti-spike type 6 socket computer/hifi extension lead. I have easy access to my cellar below the hifi room and I have 3 fuse boxes with many spare supply ports in that cellar - can I just run a 10mm mains cable from a 30amp fuse box supply to the room and terminate with a socket and then plug in my belkin?? or should I have 6 separate supply switches??

All suggestions are welcome. Thanks for reading.

Thanks for that. Perhaps I will wait for some further replies and maybe e-mail you in a little while!

As the Nike ad says :

Just Do It

It's not expensive but the best upgrade you are liable to make pound for pound. It will serve your equipment now, and in the future.

doctorf,

While you're investigating the dedicated spur idea, try losing the Belkin surge thingy. Naim has always recommended against using a surge protection strip. You should notice a nice improvement in the tunes.
