About 15 years ago I did a 6 week Archery evening class. Simple "long bow" pin sight. A very enjoyable experience. How they manage to miss with those bloody double reflex stabalised micro sighted "bows" the thing almost places the arrow into the gold. Roll Eyes I think the bows we shot were 40-50lbs, how our forbears drew 90-120lb bows heaven knows. No wonder they started as kids.
Now I think about it I may have to have another go.

Excellent Stuff, the people are real English Herö's.

Tried it the other week at Center Parcs. The other half loved it but my eyesight got the better of me. Apparently, we now need to purchase a board that can be located in the arbor in the garden (sigh!!!).

Tried it as night class many years ago (even before arthur took one in the eye).

To be honest, it obviously required a great deal of skill, but boy is it sedantary. You relax as much as possible to steady the bow, you hit the target, no adrenalin, no feeling of exhilaration, no kissing your team mates.

Typical Brian smutty inuendo with the female archers drastically limited due to them holding bows loaded with very sharp arrows.

Not for me or my buddies.

Until a few years ago, there was apparently a law still on the statute books requiring all Englishmen over a certain age (11 or thereabouts) to practice with their longbows every day.

Bhoyo

You are sort of right.

The law is that every man shall take his son to practice archery every sunday.

The law has never been repealed.

A long time ago I was a keen archer.
I was a junior at the time (under 18) but by the time I was 14 I was Welsh junior champion (indoor and outdoor) and competing against the men as there was no real competition for me in the junior ranks, except at national level.
I also represented Wales several times in international competition.
On one occasion in the welsh championships I was runner up in the mens event. This led to Guinness giving me a scholarship. Sounds fancy but it was basically a couple of weeks each year at a training camp. That probably sounds a little ungrateful but I don't mean it that way. I was very grateful and in later life have done my best to repay some of that loyalty!
I qualified as 1st reserve for the mens team for the commonwealth games in edmonton, canada in 1978, but alas never got there. Next thing you know I had O levels, girls and alcohol to contend with - and not necessarily in that order!
It all seems a bit of a blur now, and not really like it was me who did it at all.
I can remember winning one particular tournament 5 years running. And if I remember correctly I was Welsh champion 3 times and North Wales champion 5 times.
If any of you out thereare aware of the classifications in archery I was a Master Bowman, held a FITA Star and a Six gold badge before my 15th birthday.
So thanks for sending my memory into overdrive Mike.
What's your reason for asking by the way?

Regards,

Steve O.
