Paging Mike Lacey and other "Locals" - Julian Cope gig

Mike (& others)
Julian Cope has a gig in Reading on Sat. 18 Sept. http://www.readingarts.com/whatson/default.asp?page=2&order=dateStart&month=9&year=2004&venue=&season= (bugger - how do I get that to read something sensible?). We are ~10 mins walk from the venue (and from the railway station) so if anyone is going you could park near ours and have a bite and drinks before hand or even after.

Not a bad afternoon / evenings work – some vinyl purchases, good beer, a quick system blast and the Julian Cope gig.
When I arrived at the Sound Machine Seagull and Malcolm were already heads down and bums up in the £1 bins. Unfortunately Bev wasn’t in – he was at the Reading –Gillingham game (3-1 to the Royals, now 2nd in the “Championship”), this deprived Seagull of communion with another Chameleon fan.
New purchases wrapped tightly in plastic bags – it was pissing down- we were off to the Hobgoblin – no longer a Wychwood pub but the only decent watering hole in Reading. West Berkshire Brewery’s Hopdog and Dr Hexter’s Wedding Ale went down very well, the Hopdog requiring a second pint just to confirm how good it was. Then it was back to ours for a bite to eat and a quick listen to some of the new purchases. Seagull and Malcolm can tell you what they were.
The venue is a 15 minute walk away, but I’d forgotten that the last time we went it was still light at 7:30, so after a small direction faff we get there.
Support band - shirts and ties by the Hives, hair by Leo Sayer and riffs by AC/DC, not bad but a pretty terrible mix - ear bleeding treble, not helped by the venue which is quite bright at the best of times.
Mr Cope appears in large Bill and Ben hat and very dark shades, just him and his guitar – the desk have got their shit together now and it doesn’t sound too bad at all. Malcolm does not look too impressed initially but the between song banter and stories are hilarious. Most of the songs are off Droolian and Skellington which I don’t have but he does an excellent “Pristine” to finish.
If you get the chance, go and see him, dates are on his website www.headheritage.co.uk

We had an excellent afternoon/evening. Bought some good records (see the Last LP thread) including a couple I've been seeking for quite a while. As LoFiSi said the pub was good and beer very high quality and a good range. Definitely to be visited again next time we're in Reading.
Back to the LoFiSi's for some food and music, they live only a short walk from the bustling town centre but may as well be a world away. LoFiSi's sistem sounded very good and the food (an more beer) was very welcome.
The support band were called DognTank (I think).
I was not sure what to expect from Mister Cope, fearing he'd turn up the worst for wear and out of it. How wrong could we be? He was excellent, his stories would have been a credit to any stand-up comic, the songs were almost a diversion. A very entertaining set. So good we're going to see him again at Aldershot.
