Allae & PMC LB1 signature

Posted by: KenTo on 25 April 2004

I always like the "Naim sound", and quite happy with the Allae, especially by upgrading to CDX2, Hicap to 282 and changed to 250-2, but as said before, I always feel there is lack of something in the Allae presentation, so recently I started to search for new speakers.

I tried Dynaudio S1.4, JMLab 906, B&W 805S, ATC12, Thiel 1.6 and PMC LB1 signature. I am not going to go through the details. I am not sure, whether those speakers are not in good match with other components during the test, or they are just not my taste, anyway PMC LB1 signature is very good to my ear. Speaker choice is very subjective and very personal taste.

When I got the LB1-S home, although it is not mounted in a good stand – a 30” tall BBC wood stand for my rear speakers, it matched Naim very well; unexpected tight and deep bass and dynamic from such small speakers with the 5" Dynaudio mid-bass driver, and it provides relative sweet and warm vocal which is very comfortable to listen! What is most surprised me is the 3D sound stage and sound image, but not to the extent that partner with the round earth amp. They also do PRaT very well.

However, it is weird that after few days listening, I miss the Allae very much, then I connect it again to listen, and realized that even though Allae is not all round, but its strength on speed, accuracy, timing and the ability to sound very real (piano, string…) and handle very complex music are its true magic. In comparison it has more excited and open high than the LB1-S, all in all, Allae and LB1-S are both great speakers, they are both very musical and dynamic, but somehow Allae gives more exciting presentation whereas LB1-S gives relative smooth, comfortable, good sound stage and image presentation .

I think detail comparison of Allae and LB1-S is pointless, as they are different presentation, and I found playing different music into different speakers gave me great pleasure, but this lead to the problem that I don’t have room to place them side by side and need to switch speakers often.

Wondering, anyone here has similar experience that can share and finally got a solution or found a speaker that shows all the good attributes above?

Set your requirements and obtain the speakers that meet those requirements and accept the other limitations. For example, the Royd RR2 model is very good with rhythm, and produces very clean bass notes but the Neat Elite mid-range is more refined. They are good speakers for Naim electronics (and I did not see them on your list).

My friends laughed at me when I told them that the Allaes were going to be the last speakers that I own. Before buying them, I changed my loudspeakers every 6 months on average looking for the ones that truely made me happy. I've had models from Spendor, B&W Nautilus, Dynaudio, Epos and Wharfedale just to name a few, but I am so happy with the way that the Allaes play music that I don't even think of changing speakers any more. To me they sound more like real music than any other speaker. It was doubt that made me try so many models before, and now that doubt has completely gone away. If anything, I'd give SL2's a try, just to get more of the same, but my wall isn't that solid anyway so the Allaes are probably just right for me as I have them about a foot away from the wall in my small room. Allaes are beautiful to look at and listen too, other brand speakers don't even come close. I have had mine for about 2 years now and they show improvements further up the chain very easily.

These two speakers are indeed, different beasts. They're both 'right' and both 'wrong' - I bet that helps?

I use SBL's and whilst I recognise their failings, could not be without their snap, and tight driving sound.

The only speaker I ever heard that had everything (a tight driving sound and a big, big soundstage) was a Wilson system 6? (Watt/Puppy) at a current price of around £20k.

Bugger!

HI KenTo

I dem'ed the LB1 speakers years ago before buying Ruarks. I liked them a lot very dynamic and fast but the Ruarks had a better overall balance. One point of interest is the LB1's are studio monitors and are made to play what they are given, in other words a good recording sounds great but a poor one sounds crap.

Personally, I think you're looking at the wrong end of the system.

The allaes really benefit from an XPS2 on the CDX2.
I have a friend with EXACTLY the same system so I can attest to the awesome upgrade that an XPS2 gives.

To me the limit of the Allaes is about CDX2/XPS2/252/250. Then the speaker could be considered a bit out of its depth. But you have a long way to go yet!

Get a Fraim if you haven't already.

Some people dis Naim speakers but I think they're damn fine. Especially the Allaes.
