Comments on Sony VPL 12 (Manu)

I have an opportunity to purchase a second hand Sony PL 12 projektor for about 3000 Euro.

Would appreciate any comments on its price/performace compared to newer offerings.

(Manu, I believe you have (had?) one; your comments would be especially welcome.)

I had an 11. It was better than the 12. Sony had cheapped the 11 to make the 12 be more competitive price-wise (better contrast but less light output, less conections, DRC (Sony's line doubler) is worse.
Those LCD are now out-dated by the DPLs: much better contrast, more light, more color saturation,..better picture. The only advantage of those LCDs are the pixel count, if you use them for computers, they are better than DLPs.

This said, it is not a bad deal (about half the retail, it should be less than 2 year old) IF you get a new lamp (quite expensive, around 450 euros) and you demo it before you buy, you know that LCD can have a dead pixels problem. You have to try it with a red, a green and a blue picture. Check the lens for scratches, the air filter to be sure it has been change regularly: if it is very durty, the projector has over heated and its reliability can be affected. Try to have the celling-mount bracket in the deal.

I now have a Runco 710, waiting for the new digital video processor and the DVD5.
