From the BBC website, John Peel died of a heart attack while on holiday in Peru.

I work literally just opposite Radio One and John Peel was a familiar site winding his way down Great Portland Street. He had the totally unaffected air of an old bloke going for a stroll in the country.

A sad day for good music.

It strikes a personal chord when we lose someone who has shaped our musical appreciation and discovery.

Thanks John.

Enjoy the music wherever you are now.

John.

A huge loss to broadcasting and music lovers everywhere. He cannot be replaced and I fear he represents the end of an era, where DJs were real music enthusiasts and lived and breathed it. Crucially John Peel challenged his listeners, and no one seems to do that anymore...

Although I shared a lot of his musical tastes, I will miss him most for the Home Truths series on R4.

It made me think and laugh out loud.

He is reputed to have heard most different music than anyone else in history.

Sad,

Dear All,

A very sad day.

John Peel and Uncle Bob Harris through their love of music and enthusiasm for the miusicians and musical styles have provided me with over 30 years of wonderful music.

They have enabled me to be brave and listen outside my normal preferences thus exposing me to many great artists of wildly differing styles.

If you were to listen to just one of Johns programs it would be impossible to categorise the intended audience.

He had no formula.

It occassionally was as simple as :

This came through the post the other day.

They are a 3 piece from Sometown Somwhere and they are definitley worth seeking out at the Rat And Pigeon in Knobsworth next month.

Here is a track from the demo they sent me:

You either loved it went to see them then bought the album tee shirt and bought the albums produced over a long period of time.

Or you thought they were crap.

Best bit if they were crap 5 mins later John was playing a favourite of his from when he was living in the states and went to see 500 times in one year. He then played a track off their first album. And wham. You gotta have it . So off to record shop that weekend to buy the album.

If i am to be bitter and twisted.

JOHN PEEL has cost me a Fucking Fortune over the last 30 odd years.

But my life has been very much richer for that.

So it is now down to Uncle Bob to carry on in his own inimitable style and try and fill some of the hole left by Johns Passing.

Best wishes to his family and friends.

regards David

He shaped my taste in music, DJ'ed at the first concert I went to, and has made my Saturday mornings for a long time. Lots of memories.

It doesn't seem right. My life was richer because of him, and it will be poorer in his absence. He will be missed.

So many great bands, so many great sessions and that warm and natural tone on home truths was the touch of the common man.

RIP John you'll be sorely missed.

Well, that's all bands from Norwich buggered then. Frown

John Peel was a champion for music in the region and a constant companion for me in the '70s (though I didn't log his show like the Today reporter this morning did!)

I'll miss him. Weird music will miss him.

I wonder if he can get insurance for his American car where he is now?
