Retro food

Posted by: Roy T on 29 August 2004

The Prawn Cocktail started me thinking about the food of the lateish 70's and from what I can remember a Saturday night out might be something like this:

A starter:
Chilled Melon
Egg Florentine
French Onion Soup
Homemade Rough Farmhouse Pate
Prawn Cocktail

Main Course:
Beef Stroganoff
Chicken in a Basket
Chicken Kiev
Duck a la Orange
Trout with Almonds
Vegetarian Quiche

Vegetables:
Glazed baby Carrots, , Brown Rice, Chips (can't remember too much about veg)

From the sweet trolly:
Apple Pie & Ice Cream
Cheesecake & Ice Cream
Hot Chocolate Sundae
Knickerbocker Glory

From the bar:
Black Tower
Blue Nun
Hirondelle
Mateus Rose
Double Diamond
Watneys Red
White Shield

Anyone else got any ideas?

Over a year ago I was taken to a new 'hip' Grill in London that served retro food. We all laughed because the food wasn't very good at all -- burgers, fish and chip, fish that reminded me of 'boil in the bag' stuff with parsley sauce. Luckily the wine was flowing and the company was great.

70s food to me means beefburgers, fishfingers, crinkle-cut chips, Angel Delight. Anything my mum cooked out of a nice plastic packet was a relief from school food, towards which I'd developed a near-clinical neurosis by 1979.

And you would need to include Campari and Martini on the list.....

What about mince meat and potatoes? A bit od a staple as a kid, I always wondered why Mum never just mashed the spud and made it into cottage pie, but in retrospect I think she couldn't be arsed and fair enough!

Smash Means Mash

An uncanny resemblence to Gary Rhodes - but with less spikey bits.

Where Monster Munch 70's or 80's?

When I was in college (in the states) which was in the late 90's, they had Watney's Cream Stout at a steakhouse my parents used to take me to when I was home, and I liked it a lot.

Going back to deserts of the late 70's, what about ice cream parfaits and seven layer cake?

What about the original Sodastream ?

The Raleigh Chopper ?

Space Hoppers ?

A sweet trolly should include cream covered profita rolls plus and abundance of rum babas.

I can't believe that you have all forgotton to mention the king of '70's desserts - the Black Forest Gateaux.
70's style eating is alive and well in the Glasgow area. Despite some excellent restaurants I have a friend whose menu choices can always be relied upon;
1. Prawn Cocktail,
2. Steak with chips, mushrooms and onion rings
3. Apple pie with custard

that sends shivers down my spine! I seem to remember no matter how much you stirred your pot noodle there would always be a little pocket of powder lurking at the bottom just to chemically remove a few unsuspecting tastebuds..

and wasnt the curlywurly a 70's invention? back then there was no way you could bite through one without all the chocolate falling off in the process onto the seat of your dads mk3 cortina, oh how that made him laugh!?
Sweets today are soft!

Remember also when "Soor Plooms" sucked both cheeks together ? The chemicals used probably had a half-life !

Another great (for me anyway) childhood memory of the 1970's wae that comics often had sweets on the cover - nowadays the dental police would ban that one straight away in favour of some piece of plastic nonsense......

Shoot, Score, Victor, Commando Books, Snorkel jackets, Dessie boots, Adidas Kick - the list goes on and on.

It was a truly Round Earth experience growing up in the 1970's
