At last, an interesting thread worth commenting on.
Strange how you've picked England/France as the last two, as I've been thinking the same for the past few weeks. England are under no pressure and I think they will emerge a bit of a dark horse this 2004. Owen was playing great for Liverpool recently and Rooney plays his best for England. This time, there's a quiet before the storm and I think Rooney will start the brewing.
This is not a biased England's view, but just a feeling.
Winner : England
Runners Up : France
How Well Will Ing-er-lund Do? : Win
Dark Horses : England
Top Scorer : Owen
Emerging Superstar : Rooney (if he's not already)

I am a huge admirer of van de vaart but surely he has already emerged? It seems like he's been around for years even with a year out when he did his knee.
I really think The Netherlands are gret value at 15/2 -- they have a reasonably solid defence (unlike France), a fabulous midfield (Sniejder, van de Vaart, Davids) and one of the world's best goalscorers. What's not to like?

Van Persie is not going to be there*, so Alex's doom-laden predictions can, mercifully, be ignored.
*Might still out-play Heskey of course.

Matthew,
Holland is a bunch of overpaid players not a team.

As you're all Football loving, paper buying people, can someone let me know if you see the Euro 2004 Canon ads anywhere (the ones with lots of painted faces) as my girlfriend is in them.

You write for Private Eye under the pseudonym "Sally Jockstrap" don't you? Do I win five pounds?

By tipping England to go out in the group stages, they will (inevitably) defeat the French 6-0 in the final.
That's what I think.

Davie,
How do you keep up with this stuff this side of the pond? I've given up -- coverage here is just abysmal. Still, after reading this, I should be all set.

I'm part of that strange tribe of US-based fans who scan obscure TV channels (Foc Sports World is the best) in the wee hours. I also read sportinglife.com, football365.com and a selection of Brit papers online. And I go to British pubs that show games on satellite TV.

I thought Spain looked quite good. I think they will get better and they will score with Torres, Raul and Morientes.
Any side with Valeron on the bench has to be taken very seriously.
Portugal looked shite though.

Where does Germany sit in all of this? I suppose I'll casually follow along to see how they fare.
Posted on: 12 June 2004 by matthewr
Fingers crossed Germany will be very bad. The rest of the world will enjoy this immensely as the Germans have annoyingly won far too often in the past.
The Netherlands Vs Germany is a bigger and nastier rivalry than Brazil Vs Argentina or England Vs Germany and will be essential viewing.

The other question:
Will the Germans follow the awful advice given by their team doctor (seen in Alex's link)?
