Laser Sunday Afternoon
Posted by: Berlin Fritz on 14 September 2004
Whils't working as an anti-social worker a few years back I had the experience
of taking old people for "Out Patient" corrective laser eye surgery on at least
ten occassions. The majority of these folk were over 75 and we taxied in, I
waited whhelchair or crutches bound in a roomfull of laughing people while the
operation was carried out.
Being on a full anasthetic the patients (some 6 an
hour +) had to wait for some time afterwards to make sure there were no
complications on that front, ie, dying etc, It was very funny indeed as they
were all stoned out of their tiny minds on the stuff and telling jokes & playing
as if they were all teenagers again, like a normal day for any hack worth his or
her salt actually. Many of them became friends purely by this post-operative
experience, what a bonus.
After undergoing a full eye-test myself in december
last by one of Berlin's finest Opthalmic surgeon's; if not indeed the best !
(though he's Norwegian ?) I asked him about the proceedure for myself. His
advice was that if one is diagnosed as being possibly helped by the op (I was)
it's better to wait until a later stage of life (if you make it) as it
weakens/thins the outer eye layer, and if repeated (Common in older folk as eye
deteriorates/loses focus again) can actually be counter-productive in the long
run, as well as being bloody expensive (Cash here too for that one), so there
you have it from someone who knows his cortina's from his catamaran's, innit.
