Help! Broken CDS2 or CDX is the one for me?

Hi,

I picked up a 2nd hand CDS2 recently which has been playing for a month or more now, but upon switching it back to my CDX, I find that I prefer the cheaper CD player!
Don't get me wrong I could live with either, but the CDS2 just doesn't grab my attention as much - I find myself turning the volume up to make it more involving. The sound I get is a more controlled, but it just doesn't seem to sparkle as much. Bass lines don't seem as prominent and the excitement seems to have faded. Vocals do seem more natural though.
Is this typical and I just prefer the sound of the CDX, or could the player be at fault?
Both players are about 6 years old and they front an XPS, 82, Hicap, 250, Fraim with Arcs.

Andrew,

Good post, you put it into words better than I ever could.
I'll be giving it more airtime, but I don't think it will win me over, I must be too used to the CDX presentation.
I think a CDX2 demo is in order!

Probably the first indication that the CDS2 is better.

Hmmm - I'd say the opposite, ie. you turn up the volume to try and get back the feeling that's missing at "normal" volume.
