Do any of you chaps have the BBE "Funk Spectrum" comps by Keb Darge, Pete Rock, DJ Shadow, Kenny Dope, etc? Any good?

I have all the Keb Darge albums on BBE, plus the Josh Davis one. They are superb. I hear rumour that Pete Rock one is excellent, but I've not picked it up. They are keenly priced, and on vinyl, the packaging is excellent.

Watch out tho', the I've noticed that cheaper comps do copy Keb's tracklists. If you've grabbed a few funk comps, you might find alot of stuff on the earlier ones has been replicated elsewhere.

Good pointers- I'll be sure to compare tracklists with my current funk collection. Thanks.

Mekon,

On behalf of your credit card's forthcoming funk purchases, I thought I'd share the results of my comparing tracklistings from...

Funky 16 Corners, New Orleans Funk, Saturday Night Fish Fry, Miami Sound, Chicago Soul, Keb Darge's Legendary Deep Funk Vol I, The New Mastersounds, Funk Spectrum I, II, II (and Jukebox 45s... I think).

"You Got To Be A Man" and "Dap Walk" are covered twice. That's all!

The other two 'Legendary Deep Funk' comps are also worth grabbing BTW, as is this.

Off that list, I still 'need' Funk Spectrum II and III. I haven't got the Chicago or Miami albums either, but I wasn't sure about them. Are they worth picking up?

I'll tell you in the coming weeks- they're next on my funk list (Miami, Chicago, FS I, II, III).

Oh my goodness, I haven't been in the Music Room for a while so only now noticed this thread...

Hmmmmmmmm, yes, I have the first funk spectrum compilation. I'll have to dig it out and have another listen. It's been a while.

I like the funky 16 corners, also the Iron Leg Compilation (on Quannum). Funky 16 corners would be on the top of my want list if I didn't have it. I'm curious about some of the others mentioned above but haven't had a chance to listen to them. Have any of you had a chance to pick up the Soul Seven box set?

Actually, I only have had a limited exposure to the Keb Darge compilations, just Funk Spectrum.

Probably one of the main reasons I don't pay much attention nowadays to funk compilations is frankly because I am too busy mining the local yard sales, garage sales, and record stores and dealers. There's somehow something very satisfying about finding my the odd funk and soul gem.

It is great to find other Funk listeners here in Naimland. And I appreciate the enthusiasm of those on this thread.

Markus
