Zidane (aka England 1 France 2)

Thank you from the bottom of my heart.

Just as the commentators were w**king (insert OR or AN as applicable) themselves into a state of euphoria and calling the players HEROES (Did they forget the D-Day celebrations ?), up steps ZZ.

Feckin' magic !!!!!

I'm still in a state of disbelif. Stupid foul by Heskey and then what was Gerrard thinking with that backpass?

Hmm...I did wonder actually whether Scotland were in the competition, could you enlighten us TomK or long-time-dead?

If your only comeback is that you're better than us you're in a bad way.

Oh dear

Nothing left to say so the thread descends into the expected racist, jingoistic debacle........

Now that came out of the blue !!!

No chip here. Just love to see arrogant big bastards getting a poke in the eye!
For example last night I watched the last half hour of a programme called "100 Best World Cup Moments" or something like that. I saw the top 10 and 7 or 8 involved England. Get a grip FFS.

Why on earth do you Scots get such a thrill from seeing England lose? I know for one that I would be supporting the Scots (or the Welsh, or the Irish) should they be in a big cup game against someone from outside of the UK. It just doens't happen too often Wink

No chip but a modicum of bitterness, perhaps? Wink

Sorry that your knowledge of the game is so lacking that you don't appear to know that Scotland are not in fact there, having been royally rumped in the play-offs by Holland. Perhaps if you took your head out of your arse you'd know more about what was going on in the football world.

What's the betting that the Portuguese riot police will be working overtime tonight as the "British" fans enjoy themselves. (ooh - controversial!)

Definitely a lot of bitterness there, methinks! Big Grin

Bitterness = reality

England = Britain

Beaten Fans = Portugese Riots involving Britons

Oops - foreseeing the future........

I've got English in-laws and a fine bunch of folk they are too. I've also had many, many English friends over the years. I admire many of the players out there for you tonight. However if, God forbid, England were to achieve anything in the world of football we know that we'll still be hearing about it years from now (FFS you're still dining out on tales from 1966). It's the smug arrogance of the English press and media who don't understand (or more likely just don't care) that England, Ireland, Scotland and Wales may be part of the Union, but are still separate countries. We're not English regions or provinces but separate nations with our own culture and history. Much of it may be in common with or similar to England's but we're not English.

We watch "national" news which often gives extensive reports on English football and ignores Scottish (and I presume Irish and Welsh) games.

We watch "national" coverage of football games with English commentary teams and all that entails i.e. jingoism, jokes about funny foreign names, dirty diving foreign bastards, crap foreign goalies, ignorance about players who don't play in England etc.

We see national news coverage of "British" fans rioting abroad when England are playing.

We regularly have Scottish sterotypes trotted out in TV drama (when a drunk or hard man is called for the chances are he'll be from Glasgow).

The list is endless and frankly you can only laugh it off so many times. There comes a point when it gets right up your nose.

Sorry to get a bit serious on such an entertaining night.
