Thank you from the bottom of my heart.
Just as the commentators were w**king (insert OR or AN as applicable) themselves into a state of euphoria and calling the players HEROES (Did they forget the D-Day celebrations ?), up steps ZZ.
Feckin' magic !!!!!

You're right Matthew and it's not a very attractive characteristic. "Stand up if you hate England" is still sung regularly at Scotland matches although thankfully it doesn't get the reaction it used to. Taking some delight in the England football team being beaten is entirely different from hating the entire English nation. I read occasional articles about alleged racism against English people up here but frankly I'm sceptical. I think by and large English people are well accepted and integrated into Scottish society. Any of you Englanders with any personal experience of this?

As I said in the more interesting thread about Euro 2004, England deserved to lose last night so I'm not an Englishman who can't see the real picture.
Thought I'd post in this thread though if only to point out that I can't imagine starting a thread because Scotland lost.
Sad bastards.

Scotland to their credit were only 90 minutes away from Euro 2004.
Unfortunately that was the night they turned in their worst performance.
It would have been interesting to see Scotland there and Wales too; but it wasn't to be.
Lets face it, Croatia and Switzerland didn't impress.
Latvia will be interesting to watch against their 3 opponents.

Interesting to note that the gloating Jock contingent are now posting in a more considered manner hoping that no one remembers the first few comments made at the thread head.
I work with a flame-headed Scotsman, during the World Cup he took great delight in cheering whoever England played. He tried and tried but eventually gave up when he realised that we just felt sorry for him feeling the need to rant like this.
He has since grown up and this morning, only mentioned the words "England-France" once, an hour into the day.
Regards
Mike

Sorry to disappoint you Mike but does it ever occur to you that perhaps we were having a bit of fun at your expense and it's just a bit boring now. You swallowed the bait hook line and sinker and I for one found your outraged responses totally hilarious.

Sound good, but its actually crap.
Your response is actually the next line that m'colleague came out with when we asked him why he bothered. "Och I'm just having fun " Eventually he grew up.
I did not swallow any bait, you are not some clever Celt just another Jock with an inferiority complex viz. the English.. I just pointed out that the responses where very predictable.
Which they remain.
Mike.

You're so wrapped up in your own importance you just don't get it do you. We were taking the pish and you didn't realise it. We just kept stirring the pot and sat back and waited for the outraged responses. It was the funniest thing I've seen in ages. You in particular bit so hard you nearly pulled me off the boat. Recognise this?
"And your knowledge of baiting is so lacking that you don't appear to know that we all know that Scotland are, in fact, not there."
You've been had. Last night's result just keeps getting more enjoyable with every pompous post like this.

Something along these lines, or the previously mooted Atlantic League, will happen. Scotland, Holland, the Scandinavian countries and Belgium all have decent clubs operating in Mickey Mouse leagues. They see the money flowing into England, Spain, Italy and Germany and they want to join the party.
At the same time, I would hate to see Celtic or the other mob deserting Scotland altogether.
Anyway, this is all too gentlemanly for this thread!

Davie,
I think it's got to happen for us both because we're going nowhere in the cesspool that's the SPL. And it's also got to be a requirement that folk like Lex Gold ("The SPL has handled this affair in an effective and efficient manner" when quizzed about Thistlegate!!) are nowhere to be seen when it finally does happen.
Incidentally, what about yer man's first goal tonight? And what about the commentator's comment "could he have scored goals in the Premiership?". Sums up what we've been discussing here. He's obviously scored a barrowload not only in the SPL, but in the Champions League, EUFA Cup, World Cup, and European Championship but these ignorant twats have to ask whether he could have scored in England!
In with anger, out with love.

Tom:
Lex Gold is a national disgrace.
I've given up listening to bloody commentators. I like to think they embarrass the decent English people too - and there are plenty of 'em on this forum.
I'd love to see Sweden and the King do well in this tournament, but it hurts that he won't be wearing the hoops again. Sigh...

I'm 50% English/50% Scottish though - so it doesn't work with me, even were it true (which it's not).
Go on then - from the dizzy heights of your superiority please explain why England were singing "Are you Scotland in disguise to the French" and at the same time justify why the Scots should be supporting England.

The commentator handled that quite badly because it seemed that he was aware of Larssons record and probably did think that he'd have done a job in England.
Larsson is a good striker (the finishes last night being typical of the sort of thing us Rangers fans have been having to put up with for a while), he's technically very competent and his off the ball movement is good (although the marking from the Bulgarian defence were very poor) plus he works hard. That'd add up to goals in any competition IMHO.

It doesn't even make any sense - I'd have thought the fans would be pretty unhappy if the team were only leading Scotland by 1 goal after 90 minutes. A performance that poor surely would have cost the manager his job?

Britons held over Algarve clashes

That story is being written as a non-football story about Britons committing drink realted public order offences on a night out on holiday. If it were a bunch of Scots it would say Britons as well.

Have you read it? Some quotes:
"About 200 football fans, some of them English, clashed overnight with Portuguese riot police in Albufeira."
"On Sunday, police across England made 83 arrests after fans rioted following England's Euro 2004 loss to France.
Some 400 people were involved in disturbances in Croydon, south London, where police were pelted with missiles and 13 people were arrested. "
"In Birmingham, police had to close off parts of Broad Street for 45 minutes after disturbances broke out at about 2150 BST.
One man was taken to hospital with minor injuries.
The violence involved fans who had been watching the match on a big screen in the city's Centenary Square.
There were 17 arrests in Wakefield, West Yorkshire, and 31 across Hertfordshire.
And a further 11 were held after two police cars were set alight in Boston, Lincs, and a group of up to 60 people threw bricks and bottles at police."
Looks football related to me. If those are the goggles you're using to look at press stories then it's no wonder you've seen no bias.

Bloody right, Steve G.
Its not as if the French are European Champions or the favourites, or have the best player in the world, or anything.
