Personal webspace
Posted by: JonR on 23 November 2004
Guys, can you help?
A mere four weeks after getting Broadband I have only just realised that I have my own personal webspace, which, presumably I could use to host images and suchlike.
However, I have no clue how to set this up - I need an index.html page to start off with or something.
I use an Apple iBook G3.
Does anyone have any advice or tips about how I go about this, and/or what software I might need for the purpose?
Thanks in advance for any reply.

Go to your ISP's web site and do a search on "FTP"

Depends how complicated you want to make it.
At a basic level, you upload files to your space using an FTP program.
EDIT - oops.. you have a Mac.. ask me in a week :-)
Usually you would connect to webserver.yourisp.com with the username and password they supply, drag the files over, and you can access them by browsing to http://webserver.yourisp.com/yourname/pic1.jpg etc..
If you want a "proper" website, that's where index pages and likes come into it, you'd design a web page that might have links and thumbnails and whatever else, and save the main page as index.html.
I'm sure others can explain web design better than me - I suck at it :-)
cheers,
Paul

If you use Mozilla - it has a simple web page editor that you can use to create your first web page. Then you have to FTP your file up to your web space.
Your first web page need not be complex, it does not have to have links to any other data you put on the web space. - so you could put picture files on your web space disks and reference them in posts on this forum without having a reference to them on any web page.
For the Mac (and any other platform that supports Java) try JFTP to do your ftping - it will move whole directory structures in a single operation - it is free for home use - use Google too find it.

Just looked at the JFTP page. Doesn't anybody use English any more?
I think I need to go to night school and have some body explain these things in one sylable words.

Find out from your ISP what services you get with your webspace. It might be that it's just like the free webspace you can get anywhere - if so, a free FTP programme (for dumping images and whatnot up there) is the place to start, and you might want to buy yourself a copy of something like dreamweaver later (for designing fancy webpages). If they say that MySQL and PHP are supported, you might want to install a blog (wordpress, moveable type, etc) or some form of content management (Drupal, Mambo, etc). If you are lucky, they will have ControlPanel installed, which lets you manage your webspace through a simple web-based interface.
I had free webspace and dreamweaver for ages, but never found the time to do anything interesting. Now I have a hosting deal with mysql and php supported, I do most of my work on TEH INTERNETS!!!1

Jon goto www.verstiontracker.com and download rBrowser lite.
This will now act as your FTP client.
Goto the homeapge of your service provider, log in and get help on what information you need to use FTP.
Usually it will be along the lines of upload.yourserviceprovider.com
User name: Your login name for email
Password: Your email password.
This information goes into rBrowser, you can then simply drag files or whatever into rBrowser for it to be uploaded to your web space. In terms of whole websites this would be created in something like Freeway and this can also be configured to upload to that webspace.
Its very easy once set up!

See my new thread on this very subject.
Go to Image Shack as recommended by other forum members. It's completely free, and easy to use.

Jon
Your ISP should provide you with all the info, but if you're struggling please PT me. I'll try and walk you through it.

Well, thank you to everyone for all your replies!
So far I've downloaded a freeware FTP app that has allowed me to access my webspace, so now I am wondering, do I need to create a web page to host pictures, or can I just save images in the top folder and access them from there?
Thanks again.

Nick,
How did you come by webspace for BT? I have the BT Broadband £24.99/month service and pay an additional £1.50 for the btyahoo POP3 email service. It all works extremely well but no webspace is included.

Nick,
myself a JN came up against this recently.
Perhaps it is there, just not publicised. Can you let us know what the address is (maybe by e-mail), so we can see if JN has an equivalent available to him?
cheers, Martin
E-mail:- MartinPayne (at) Dial.Pipex.com. Put "Naim" in the title.

Nick,
With help from garyi & HTK (thanks guys) I've now managed to access my personal web-space. Like you I don't have an index page - all I have to do is store whatever file I want into a directory called htdocs and, hehe, it's sorted!
Cheers!

Rana sounds like you are paying too much if that is for 512 service. Like Nick the web space arrived after the yahoo link up. N.B. it may have been there before and I didn't notice.
