Jonathan Coe's 'The Rotter Club', BBC2 Wed 26/1/05

I suspect many of the 40-somethings on the forum will find a lot to like in this dramatisation of Coe's book of the same name.

The book is very good too.

I'm hoping we'll get the Hatfields on BBC2 as well!

The book is indeed good, and music plays a large part in it. The book is set at the time when Prog was being usurped by Punk, and the author suggests (IMHO) that this change is similar to the political change from consensual to confrontational that happened at the same time.

So, Jim Callaghan = Jon Anderson, Maggie Thatcher = Johnny Rotten...

Jonathan Coe's works demonstrate a firm political allegiance which certainly won't suit all of the regulars here.
I discovered his books only last year and have become quite a fan. I just hope the Rotters' Club won't be softened into a simple 70s nostalgia fest.

Did anyone see this?

I thought it was bluddy marvellous - getting Clement and La Frenais in was a stroke of genius. A fine adaption of an excellent book.

I thought it was an excellent first episode - right up to the last 5 seconds. Frown
