5i and Quad Speakers
Posted by: scottyc on 25 April 2004
Hi all
I'm quite impressed with the 5i stuff I've heard and am thinking of trading my Linn Classik and LK85 power for it. However, my wife insists that getting rid of the Quad 12L is non-negotiable. As anybody heard the naim with the quads or similar?
All advice appreciated,
scottyc

Hi Scotty
Looks like the Quads are 6ohm and 88db so the Nait5i would drive them just fine.
Good luck.

Quads With Naims
Scott, I think the 5i would do wonderfully with the 12Ls, which for the price have an immaculate finish and beauty like their younger siblings the 11s. To be brutally honest, the pair I did get to hear at a dealer here didn't quite sing for me at the end of Quad amplification during a demo, but it was in less than optimal conditions, and I suspect they weren't fully run in either.
The 11Ls though during a hi-fi show some months back proved to be tactile and nicely balanced, fast, very musical and involving, if bass light, and they were driven by Quad amplification/source as well (can't remember which). I was a mite surprised at the sound it did produce, and I remember sitting there in a little awe of how fresh the sound was compared to some of the other (more pricely) systems we'd heard that day.
Of course that awe was rather suddenly and rudely interrupted by the idea of running these fast babies at the end of a Nait 5i/CD5i for the bedroom, just to have them Naim components slotted somewhere in place of the Quads in the system. I confess to being admittedly biased.
Enjoy the Nait 5i if you so decide, though for more welly you might look further up the chain.
Good listening; the music's groovin' frightfully more.

Once was demoed a Nait 3 with Quad 11L. THis was an excellent combination. Allthough the sound is a little more laid back than what I am used to with Naim amplifiers and speakers like Monitor Audio or Credos. I bought the s/h Nait 3 at that time for my home office, and had the plan to purchase the Quads later. This never happened as I further upgraded my living room system AND my old Dutch Hepta deLuxe speakers of 20 years old sounded very well with the Nait 3!
I recommend to have the combination demoed first, as the 5 series already sounds a bit less "in your face" as the Nait3.
Good luck!
