Another boring bike thread.......

Posted by: long-time-dead on 24 May 2004

Sorry guys.

A long time ago in the land of my youth, I used to race bikes. This was whan bikes were bikes and there were no mountain bikes, BMX etc. I had a custom made Mercian 753 road-frame with a full Campagnolo set and Mavic Blues, FWIW.

I had a very bad accident (fractured skull, dislocated jaw, dental carnage etc) and immediately gave up riding. That was over 20 years ago.

Times had passed and I now feel like getting another road-bike. I need to get fitter and get bored of running and gyms. Swimming is great but impractical with my working hours.

Assuming I want a road bike that will cope with the rigours of street life and country roads, what can you suggest ?

Budget is not open but I am willing to push out to something decent if it is a big benefit. £1000 would be a ball park figure to start with.

I bow to your knowledge.......

long-time -

Sorry to hear about your crash, even if it was a long time ago.

Any preferences for materials? You could get a builder like Omega or Mercian themselves (I think they'e still going) to make you a custom fitted steel frame (probably 853 now), your choice of Campag or Shimmy mid range gruppo and Mavic Open Pros on groupset hubs for around that price.

The alternatives are fairly cheap aluminium (which can be OK, but often harsh), second hand (back pages of Cycling Weekly are worth looking at) or try this site for a good For Sale section and further advice: www.cyclingplus.co.uk.
Otherwise flog your system and buy a Colnago Smile

Thanks for the support.

The crash I had was not my fault at all. I was returning from a training run and one of the local streets was in darkness. Little did I know that a huge hole was dug in the road to allow repairs to a gas pipe.

I merrily went into the hole at a fair speed and straight over the handlebars. The rest you can work out for yourself.......

Anyway, this is the first time I have been enthsiastic about cycling again so I look forward to getting back in the saddle.

I'll look at all bikes I can !

I think you should budget for a helmet Smile

long-time-dead -- Presumably you got to sue the Gas Board for Gazillions though? Or was this in the old pre-suing days the Daily Mail is so fond of?

Matthew

I got some compensation but nothing like I would have got today if I knew then what I know now...........

Been looking around and one bike seems to stand out : Trek 1400 2004

Anybody use it or an alternative ?

I want a "real" road bike - something lightweight I can pound out the miles in and get decent response. I admire the leisurely approach but I don't fancy joining the Tourist's Club just yet.

I like pain, I like pain......... oops, wrong site....... Wink

FWIW - I was wearing a helmet. A little strapped affair commonplace "way back then".

Only a full face motorbike helmet might have helped ...........

Needless to say, one is on the cards..... (not a full face !)
