CDS II goes Crack and ERR

Posted by: Derek Wright on 18 December 2000

My 17 month old CDS II has started to issue violent crack sounds when playing CDS - in at least 50% of all playings a crack sound is issued on all CDs. On a significient number of playings the playback is aborted with the ERR string displayed.

If I go back and replay the track where the crack sound or the playback aborted the sympton is not repeated.

I have taken the "Puck reshaping 101" class at the dealers and now tweak the rubber like rings on the puck prior to playing a CD. However the ERRs and cracks still occur.

Any clues or suggestions please

I plan to bounce the CD player back to the dealer after the mid winter shut down.

HI,

I have also experienced digital drop-out with my CDSII with some CDs (including Naim's own). I thought this was due to quality problems with the CD not the CDSII but your post make me uncertain. Any other members with similar experiences?

By the way, can you further explain the "Puck reshaping 101" procedure!

I was shown how to reshape the little rubber rings by pinching them between the forefinger and the thumb and pulling away from the plastic body - this is to get the rings to be circular and so remove any flat spots - it appears that to get effective clamping the rubber bits must be really proud of the plastic surface. This is also mentioned in the FAQs

Hope the above helps

This has been a perennial favourite.

Usually it is the CDs at fault - central hole too big, too small, too thin, irregular etc.

Consult the faq.

However, given the number of such queries perhaps naim might consider putting something in the user manuals for CD buyers?

cheers

The CDs II performed very well up untill recently - I never experienced these problems before.

Now I get a faulty play of every CD I put onto the system - however on other CD players (a tenth of the price) they play OK

My CD collection is very stable - ie I am not buying CDS now only playing them so your point suggests that the CDs are degrading as they sit in their jewel cases.

A while back I took the CD player to the dealer and he ran it for long time (18 to 24 hours) playing a really beaten up CD and the system did not fail - the only difference was that a different power supply box and connecting cable was used.

My thoughts are to try and borrow a different powersupply and cable and see if that fixes the problem.

Derek,

Would that be the FAQ on Naim web-site? In any case, I couldn't find any reference to this discussion there!

Anders - Yes I meant the Naim unofficial Naim FAQ in the CD section - quite a bit about the problems with CDs and the players and puck training eg
1.Positioning the puck slightly off-centre.
2.Gently squeezing the feet on the base of the puck so that they stand out more.
3.Getting a different puck from your dealer or Naim.

Note that off-centre puck placement and using bits of paper are not official Naim recommendations and are
undertaken at your own risk.

Mark

It will be on your doorstep early January - I will probably bring over my self to save a day (after checking with the dealer) and the roads being open and above the water level.

To be fair to the dealer - the machine did work ok and we put the problem down to puck training

However since then.....

Thanks for the response
