Sat Nav?

Posted by: Rasher on 05 August 2004

I am spending more time in the car recently trying to find the most remote places. Yesterday it was Southend. Some little backstreet in that sprawling mass of one way system - so I'm thinking - It's time to get Sat-Nav.
I want one that is nicely integrated into the car, but not to ruin the interior or make any permanent damage. I would change the car to one fitted, but I need to keep the car for another year or so, although I'm kicking myself for not getting it at the time.
I want one that talks to me, so I don't have to watch it all the time. Any ideas which are the good ones? I prefer a real one, not a program in a handheld. Must look part of the car too - I'm not having my car look like a taxi inside.
Help please.

Eek All day at work to navigate ? The thought of it!!
"Oh, that shop looks interesting - we need new blinds for the bathroom- pull over and we can have a look while we're here.
What about lunch then? There is a nice little restaurant around the corner I heard of.
Let's just do the last one tomorrow, you can't be expected to drive all over the place like this - they will have to wait".
Oh Jesus................

Thanks Stephen
Thanks to your link this looks like the one for me.

Update: Just ordered one. Hope it's worth it! Cheaper than changing the car anyway!

I have a vg sat nav in the car, and when thinking about replacing the car, I was thinking about a more transposable solution:

What about the Tom Tom system sold by dabs?

http://www.dabs.com/uk/Search2/Product+Details.htm?quicklinx=3601&searchphrase=tomtom

Any views?

The Navman is ok - a hard wired install is the way to go. I am using this via a PDA at the moment which is a pain in the back-side. When I change my car later this year I will have a factory installed system.

Why? Please explain.
I did consider the Tom Tom, but thought it looked cheap, like a handheld Casio TV from Argos.
Funnily enough I was out with a mate last night on his boat & his sat nav system is by Garmin. It was very similar to the navman and shows bouys and wrecks. Very impressive.

Rasher,

Why ?

My company is pissing about with the Co. Car scheme, so I am thinking of trading in the Co. Car for the money and buying an older s/h pre-satnav car, but I love the convenience and the facility of the guidance..

My wife who dots around the country working also loves it, so uses my car when dotting about.

When I go somewhere other than the office, I often want the system as well (to find the obscure record shops), so I thought about having a unit that we could swap between cars, depending who it was that was out and about.

Or there again, I might and see what transpires

I use Tom Tom Navigator on a PDA. You can get various mounting brackets and it's an excellent system. I can also verify that it works in Southend because I had the misfortune of having to go there two weeks ago! It was a dunp when I grew up there and it hasn't changed a bit.

The good thing about having it on a PDA is that you can move it between cars, use it on foot (useful in London) and is easy to upgrade. Having got it I couldn't possibly go back. I will probably get it hard wired at some stage, but this won't nail it into my car because it's only the bracket. I can still move the PDA to other cars.

If you're interested I'll pop out and take a photo of the installation. let me know.

Cheers

I apologise for the lousy quality of these photos. they were taken in haste in the rain but hopefully you get the idea.

The whole thing sits on top of a Brodit clip which clicks into the trim without marking it. It is removable.

It's wired at the moment from the fag lighter. The PDA jacket takes power off it, as does the Buletooth GPS receiver (which you might be able to make out as the silver box next to the lighter socket). There is no physical connection between the PDA and GPS rec. and the latter (when fully charged) can live off it's internal battery for around 8-12 hours. This means that you don't have to live with all the wires for a couple of hours (PDA life)if you run the lot off their batteries. Useful for using the system on foot (this works well).

View from the driver's seat. Display is clear and bright - very easy to read. Spoken instructions arn't brilliant through my iPAQ5550 (a known speaker issue - it's crap!) but are understandable. Looking at the display takes no more attention off driving than changing a CD. I mostly have a really hard look at it when I'm stationary.

The PDA jacket can be left wired in if required. Dropping the iPAQ in charges it.

The software is good. Tom Tom Navagitor 3. It recalculates fast and zooms in on the view at junctions, roundabouts etc. The image is easy to read, even in sunlight and is presented in a 3-D format. It comes with points of interest and you can add more e.g. speed cameras.

Highly recommended if you want a detachable/transferable/portable system.

I've tried vent clips and suction pads for mounting the PDA. This is the most sturdy and usable solution I've come up with.

Sorry again for the shitty photos (EOS 10D - I should be ashmed!!!)

Cheers

Has anyone found a GPS or GPS/Hand held that works with a Mac?

All the ones I've looked at need a PC for map uploading and sync.

I wasn't aware that such software required a PC. Bummer. You could try contacting support at Tom Tom.

You can email them from http://support.tomtom.com/uk

Ther should be able to provide a straight answer.

You need a PC for map uploading and address book transfer.

Frown

I contacted Tom Tom and Navman. Their response was 'We might support OSX. Maybe. No ideas when if at all'.

Oh terreffic!

There are 'all in one' boxes from Navman and Tom Tom which get good reports from users. Bigger and expensive though.

Sorry it hasn't worked out PDA wise.

Not good so far.
A week on and it still hasn't come. I've phoned and emailed and finally get told it won't be in stock until next week & then it will be sent out to me. That't 2 weeks, and they not only debited my credit card immediately, but they took £763.61 after sending me a confirmation of order with the total at £744.99 incl VAT & P&P. I'm onto Barclaycard & trading standards. I've asked for a refund, but as usual - no response.
On closer inspection, they appear to be a Christian outfit Eek

neighbourhood prayer watch!

sometimes there is no substitute for walking into a shop.....if it all goes wrong you can stroll in there saturday morning and give em a right earbashing in front of their customers! rather more difficult to do via a phone and the internet.

I hadn't spotted that at the time. If I had I wouldn't have used them. I know a very full-on evangelical Christian who is the biggest liar and cheat I have ever met.
