Adobe Photoshop - No brainer???

Posted by: Hawk on 30 July 2004

There has been alot of interesting talk about digital SLRs and ill be buying one pretty soon.. either the Nikon D70 or maybe a Canon E10 as recommended in the various related threads, but the next question is what are the choices in terms of photo editing software?
Are the adobe packages the king of the castle or are there viable alternatives?

Im using Mac OSX 10.3 if that makes any difference??

hawk, to save you a gazillion pounds you could try GIMP first, download it from www.versiontracker.com

You will need to install X11 as well if you havn't already.

The next stage is Photoshop elements 2, and to be honest this is a fine piece of programming and often comes free with cameras now, it really offers most of photoshop without some of the more detailed colour options which the laymen (ie me) wouldn't have a clue about any way.

Painter by Coral is a good piece of software, but avoid CoralPaint, which on OSX is a piece of shit.

And yes photoshop is the grand daddy by which all other software has to aspire, but it has a price tag to match.

er - actually not universally, if you have not even held the Olympus E1 and investigated the system, you are doing yourself a dis service

Thanks for the advice, here and in other threads...
I managed to speak to the Baldy guy at Jessops! and walked out with a discounted Canon EOS 10D for not much more than the 300D kit.. (ive got a 35mm EOS300 kit so didnt need more lenses) It also came with Elements 2 which was handy. Ive had a quick look at it and it seems more than enough to keep me occupied for now! That goes for both the camera and the software!

cheers

Thanks Derek, i took a look at the E1 and your right it was a stunning bit of kit, i went for the canon in the end because of the price and the compatability with the lenses i already had
