Changing from SBL's

Posted by: Darren Cotter on 29 October 2000

Greetings,

I'm about to move house and the setup of the lounge will mean changing my SBL'S . Can anyone suggest flootstanders that can be positioned freely.(I.E. not flat against a wall, 6 feet apart.)

The rest of my system is :- Linn LP12, CDI, 82, Hi-Cap x2, 250.

Many Thanks

Darren

P.S I like the sound of my SBL's

Darren if you like the SBLs, keep them & mak the room accomodate to your listening (if possible)...

Undoubtedly the best speakers I've heard on the end of a Naim system recently, apart from NBLs and SBLs are the Kef Reference 2.2 and 3.2. They work best a couple of feet away from the wall, but also have a plug-in device to contour the bass response should close placement be necessary.

They're also neutral, dynamic, ultra-detailed and brill.

How about a panel speaker - Quad 57s 63s etc? Very nice if you have the space, and are not a volume freak.

Tony.

Demo the Magneplanars. They require free space and show what the rest of the system can and cannot do.

Darren, I suggest that with your current system setup, and the requirement to have your speakers free standing and away from a wall, you should give some serious thought to trying Shahinian speakers - perhaps Arcs.
They are very underated loudspeakers, and truely have the depth, clarity and weight of sound that one associates, for example, with a symphony
orchestra in full flight. Indeed these modestly
proportioned Loudspeakers are really quite convincing in this respect. They also are very synergistic with Naim electronics.

If you want to speak to a good dealer who can tell you more about this stuff, or give you a demo, I suggest that you call Phil March at Phonography in Ringwood.
