P****ed off with DVDs

Posted by: BLT on 11 November 2004

I'm getting a bit fed up with a trend on new DVDs. Increasing numbers of these have previews at the start that you are forced to watch every time the DVD is played. The only option is to fast forward through these, but this is still a PITA. In my view, any previews should be a menu option - not something that is forced down your throat, it isn't quite so bad if you can skip them.

sadly this doesnt always work im afraid.... case in point the new shrek 2 DVD wont alow you to select the menu option until its played the intro! You can fast forward but thats the best you can do... As BLT say a major pain in the arse.. Even my little one is complaining now that she has seen it half a dozen times!

Shrek 2 was the latest example that I was posting about, I usually use an "All In One" remote so I don't have the "Menu" button on that.

all i can say is that ive tried with my DVD remote, and when you press the menu button you just get a symbol on the screen telling you that its not an accepted option, a sort of hand in a red circle with a red line through it!? until that is they have finished the trailer then all seems to be dandy!
It seemed to start with the copywrite bit when you first put a DVD in... but now the producers seem to have started extending it to trailers too..

Matthew - you are quite correct - I am pissed off with the DVD's previews that I am forced to watch.
In all honesty I didn't notice that I had put the apostrophe in there by mistake. I normally get pissed off when other people do that!

Exactly.

Buy it, declutter it, rip it and burn it then store it or flog it.

Catch up

I usually put the disc into the machine and go off to make coffe and sandwiches. When I'm back after a couple of minutes, it's usually either at the menu or has gone as far as started showing the film.

Why waste ones life on being upset at every little thing that isn't exactly the way one would like it to be? Nothing is perfect. It's a little bit like getting upset over the empty pages at the beginning of a book...

The other thing that I find annoying about dvd's are the heavily animated menu systems. I would be perfectly happy with a quick text based menu. I put the dvd in and if I don't have to fast forward through trailers there is some animation on the menu so the menu takes a while to actually appear. Then when you select something more animation taking time takes you to the next menu. All my friends that I talk to love it and think the menu's are cool! am I the only one?

Some early WB dvd's (dirty harry for example), you put the dvd in and the film starts straight away? it's magic I put a film in and a film starts playing, no mucking about at all.

no you're not. It may be cute the first time (unlikely) but if you're watching a dvd of, say, a tv series where you have to go through the animation every time you want to select an episode it quickly becomes tiresome.

An even worse thing they do is the marketing people decide nobody wants to pay extra for a 2 dvd set but 'everybody' wants 'special' features so they nobble the bitrate of the main feature so they can fit all the 'special' rubbish onto 1 disc. Besides, what makes them think they have to charge double for a 2 dvd set when the extra disc only costs a few pence?
