Calling all Blue Monday owners!

Posted by: Kevin-W on 14 January 2005

Someone has started up a project called THE BLUE MONDAY OWNERS CLUB.

Here it is

The idea is, if you have an ORIGINAL 12" pressing of FAC 73, you take a photo of it (and yourself) and send it in. the artists is planning a book too.

How cool is that? As soon as I get home I'm getting the digicam out and making a contribution!

Why oh why did I as an impoverished student sell my copy!
Posted on: 14 January 2005 by IanGrant
That's so cool!

I'll have to think about my photo -- I have a friend in Manchester, maybe I should visit her and take a shot outside the Hacienda!

I gave away a non-die-cut re-pressing I had, when I found a die-cut copy, which turns out to be a 3rd re-pressing (still original with die-cut sleeve), but has the label misprinted (The Beach is actually Blue Monday, and vice versa), of which I can find no mention on the internet at all.

So what's 'where's murder?' all about then?

How can you tell an original?

Well, I have the 12" single with the number FAC73 so does that mean that it's an original and worth zillions??????
I had no idea that it was a sought after record. If I remember correctly, I paid about 50p for it!

Computers are supposed to work on 1's and 0's - in other words "Yes" or "No" - why does mine frequently say "Maybe"?......

I have just found the original FAC73 pressing that I purchased from what was then a very small Virgin records store in Bristol and it still has the price tag on it. A grand total of £2.49. I have even managed to dig out the original FAC 93 of Confusion.

These bring back memories of part time saturday jobs, a packet of fags, a tank full of petrol for the Escort with go faster stripes and still get change out of a fiver.

You can tell an original FAC 73 by its die cut outer sleeve with notches on the lower and right-hand edges and its silver card inner. Later pressings lack the die cut (but have the inner) or have black polythene inners (with die cut) or lack die-cut AND inner. Otheers have the die-cut and inner but not tthe notches. Confused? You will be! The legend is that Peter saville's original design cost so much to manufacture that Factory/the group were losing 2p on every copy sold! As soon as the first pressing sold out, they simplified the sleeve.

I have about two dozen variants (the nicest being the Japanese pressing on Nippon Columbia, which has an obi with the lyrics on, plus the die cut, plus the silver inner (but not the notches). Roll Eyes

Blythe, if your sleeve has all the elements described above, has "outvoted" inscribed on tthe run-off on Side A and is in MINT condition (sleeve and vinyl) then I reckon it's worth £10-£13.

Mine is a contemporary pressing but only cost £1.79... OTOH it's the most boring combination of sleeve and inner.

Hmmm, mines got the die cut and the nothches but has a black inner sleeve.

Probably not a first pressing, I hated the song at first until I heard it played in its natural habitat, a club then I got it!

So it was well on its long stay in the charts by the time I bought mine Frown

Cheers Kevin

Smug-o-rama - mine even has "outvoted!!" in the run out groove. The exclamation marks are my quote.

Thanks Kevin, yes mine does have the silver inner sleeve, cut outs etc. and does indeed say Outvoted on the run-off on side A.
Probably keep it a few more years until it's worth even more. I never listen to it anyway!

Will a picture of the original Blue Monday in between the Kylie and Hardfloor versions be worth more points?

I'll have to think about my photo -- I have a friend in Manchester, maybe I should visit her and take a shot outside the Hacienda!

The Hacienda was knocked down a few years ago and the site redeveloped into a block of flats. When the new building was nearing completion the advertising slogan was "now the party's over, it's time to go home" which I thought was rather cool. The former headquarters of factory records I believe is still standing, so you could try there instead.

Just had a peek at my 12"er. Its a FAC73 and on the run-out groove has FAC-73-1A handetched as well as 'OUT VOTED'. The pressing stamp says STRAWBERRY.

I recently transferred this to CD-R using the LP12/Aro/Helikon/Geddon/PS Audio Power Plant set at 88.1 Hz to enable true 45 rpm/Prefix and the result is very good indeed.

Oh, in my Manchester University days a friend of mine (Nigel) was the Haciendas very first member (his membership card had 001 on it). Some years later he suffered a random stabbing incurred during a scirmish on the way to the said club one Saturday night. It was too trendy by far for me though. I preferred the New Continental followed by a mandatory trip the the Plaza to get some scorching curry in at 3 a.m.

Mine's knackered and says "I said where's murder" in the run out...

The label is the wrong way round, so that the side that says "Blue Monday" is actually the "Beach" b-side.

I presume they recorded or pressed it at Strawberry studio in Stockport (?)

Me and my partner both have this. Look forward to going home and seeing which versions we've got.

Yes, I know, but there is still a plaque on the wall that says 'FAC51'.
Alas, somebody already has a similar shot on there of themselves (different plaque though).

Clearly these must be the two legendary 'label wrong way round' examples before they sorted the machinery out. I hear they're worth a fortune. Big Grin

Ah found memories. I had many great night at the Hacienda, including the 15th Birthday party back in 1997, which was the last ever night, although we didn't know that at the time.

Did it REALLY last until 1997? Arse - I could have gone over from my sister's in Liverpool... My sister-in-law used to go there in the early days when she was a student...

BTW - my copy is silver inner, "Outvoted", and with all the right diecuts Smile Will get a photo tomorrow in decent light Smile

I remember first going to the Hac back in 1982, when Fad Gadget was playing. There were about eight people (all spotty students with Joy Division long black raincoats) there and I remembe the place being bloody freezing. Still, drinks were cheap and the place looked bloody amazing.

In fact, I much preferred it when it was virtually empty, rather than when it was packed with sweaty people out of their heads on E, gurning and dancing to shit house.

Best night I can remember there was a gig in June or July 83 when New Order played. The atmosphere was electric aand the band were pretty good too. The Hac was always fantastic when the Order played there, but that, as well as another gig in Jan 1983, was a standout for me.

I used to go to the Beautiful 2000 nights (Thursday?) between 1990 and 1994.

It was a great club. Without wanting to seem an uncool celeb spotter it was always exciting knowing a few famous faces would be there. Shaun Ryder, Ian Brown, MC Tunes, Vic Reeves/Bob Mortimer, Inspiral Carpets, New Fads spring to mind as people I 'danced' next to at one time or another.

If the Hacienda was full the Boardwalk across the road was pretty good too. Happy Days!
